’Broeder Jacob Double Espresso’ is a perect marriage, according brothers Johan Claes of Brewery Broeder Jacob and business man Wim Claes of coffee-roasting factory Java. This dark brown beer holds an alcohol percentage of 7,7%. The used coffee which will be mixed during the brewing, is made the Turkish way, before adding this to the process. Just as the aroma, the taste is also dominated by the javan coffee from Finca La Pila in Guatemala that Broeder Jacob uses to flavour this beer. The intense coffee taste blands with hints of milk chocolate and a subtle bitterness. And intetresting and pleasent mix. The whole is complex but mild and round. So you can either discover all the taste notes or just enjoy the overall experience. There are some flavours that are an perfect match with strong dark beers. Coffee is definitely one of those and the Double Espresso will bring you the proof!

Bottle sample. Cloudy dark brownish-amber with medium beige head. Spicy aroma, dried fruits, notes of caramel, date honey and some maltiness. Very sweet flavor, spicy, yeasty, dried fruits, prune and notes of coffee, faint soy sauce notes and quite boozy. Light carbonation, medium-bodied.

An unusual beer. Dark amber coloured. Fruity aroma with a hint of coffee. The taste isn?t as strong as it should have been (In comparison, their Double Port really has a strong port taste).

Bottle 33cl. Deep dark, brown with a slightly reddish glow. Off white head that stays. Aroma is surprisingly sweet with malts recognizable. The taste is firmly bitter, but it’s not overdone. The coffee is recognizable but not too much up front. Not bad!

Geur van frisse appel, stroop en mout. Mooi donker van kleur, stevig schuim. Smaak van iets zurige koffie.

Bottle from Mitra Bunnik, BB 27.11.16, large sample. Bit hazy amber to copper color, medium frothy off-white head. Aroma is quite spicy, clove, licorice, bit toffee, caramel, bit stale malt. Just a tiny hint of coffee. Just your typical spicy belgian dark ale. Sweet and spicy yeast in taste. Medium carbonation, thin to medium body. Boring like all Broeder Jacob beers.

Alengrin (2939) - BELGIUM - NOV 25, 2014
Coffee stout with beige, dense, creamy head, very stable and a bit cappuccino-like, over a very dark wine red beer, almost black. Interesting aroma of candied dates, meat broth, coffee powder, caramel, liquorice and red cabbage. Candied onset, raisins, candi syrup, soft carbonation, smooth, thick and full mouthfeel, deep caramelly and chocolatey maltiness, yeasty, leafy and somewhat citrussy hops in the finish as well as brandy-like alcohol and a touch of roasted coffee bitter, but more subtle than I had expected.
