Bear Tooth Ale is an American Brown ale. It is light brown in color with a tan head and slight dry hop haze. More assertively hopped than many browns, its aroma is clean and citrusy with subtle malty sweetness. Its flavor is predominantly hop forward. At the start citrusy hop flavors blend with a dry, malty fullness. Malt flavors dominate the middle while a pleasant hop tingle lingers in the finish.

2008-09-06. Dark amber body with a small off white head. (3+) Mild aroma, light hops and a touch of alcohol. Flavour is hoppy with a malt base. Average palate. Pretty decent but unexceptional. Kind of surprised to see the high ratings for this one, I didn’t think much of it at the time. Perhaps it would have stuck out more on its own. On tap at the brewpub.

[1687-20080906] Tap. Aroma has mild fruitiness. Slightly hazy, amber red body with quick foamy white bubbles. Mild fruit and grainy bitter malt flavour. Medium body is a little boozy. Good.

Draft at the brewpub’s sister Bear’s Tooth Grill, Anchorage, 7/8/05: Dark muddy orange-red with virtually no head. Decent hop aroma; milky hop flavors and very orangey. Great.

Golden in color, clear with a thin head. Nice roast malt and light hops flavor. Easy drinking Ale. They say spruce in the flavor but this was very subtle.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a translucent golden amber with an average bubbly white head. Aroma of citrus, pine, grapefruit, some toasted malts and sugary sweetness. Flavors were a mix of the same. Interesting take on a brown ale.

On tap at the Bear Tooth. Clear deep amber color with a lasting whispy off white head. Sweet nose of burnt sugar. This was a hoppy ale with flavors of orange rind, grapefruit juice, some apricot and red apple. I had this with spicey southwestern food and it complimented the heat very well. Long hoppy finish. Nice session ale.

Draft at Moose’s Tooth. Brown ale? Looks like a pale. Pale amber color with a small head. Aroma has caramel and the slightest hint of nuts. Flavor is meh, malty with mild citrus hops. Watery on the palate. Not good.

Malty and hoppy beer with decent flavors. Malt side has elements of toffee, toast, nuts and bread crust. Hop side is sprucy and grassy. Good beer.

6/19/2009: For the record, Bear Tooth Ale is a wonderful Northwest-style Red IPA. It is definitely not a Brown Ale! Anyways, it has a big, resiny, hopped-up aroma with plenty of caramel and toffee malt also detectable in the nose. Its color is a reddish amber and it has a lasting beige head. The flavor has a chewy caramel maltiness underneath lots and lots of great pine, resiny, earthy, citrus hops. This beer is smooth and medium-bodied. I daresay that it would even consider it to be a contender as a session beer. I would definitely sit around and drink it non-stop all day! It’s a damn tasty brew!

Draught (sample) at The Moose’s Tooth in Anchorage, Alaska. Rating #12 for this beer.
