COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Breukelen Abbey Ale a winter seasonal beer, is brewed in the style made famous by the monastery breweries of Belgium. Abbey is made with a blend of nine European malts, and fermented with an imported Belgian yeast. Abbey is a traditionally brewed Belgian "dubbel," a strong russet-brown ale with a spicy aroma reminiscent of chocolate, cloves, dates and figs. It contains one surprising ingredient, sugar. Many Belgian beers are brewed with a type of caramelized rock candy called candii sugar. For Breukelen Abbey Ale, we use raw Dominican sugar from the nearby Domino sugar refinery.

A real treat to get a significant sample of this amidst a beer & chocolate tasting
What happens when you mix the chocolate character of Westmalle and the date and fig character of Chimay Red? The answer is...Brooklyn Abbey. The tobacco and apple elements add just the complexity to cover the fault of this being a little thin (as others have stated). Pleasurable nonetheless.

i tried this belgium last night, not bad for a brooklyn, but not a great belgium, very vanilla tasing, but crisp and a bit over carbed, nice finish overall, with a bit of lace in the finish.

Draught at Københavnske Øldage 2005. Very dark with a nice head. The aroma consists of fresh plums and a bit of oriental spices. On the palate it is fullbodied and soft with a warming alcoholic snap at the end. Garrett Oliver told me, that the yeast used was the same as Chimay, but that this beer was fermented at 20 degrees celcius whereas Chimay ferments at close to 30 degrees celcius. Probably because of this fact, this beer does have som aromatic elements in common with Chimay, but it doesn’t have the burnt character of the latter. Good one.

Given my prior experiences with Brooklyn beer, this one was a bit of a let down. Somewhat tart with quietly subdued malts.

Draught at DBF 2005. Dark brown with a off-white head. Sweet malty, fruity aroma and flavor with lots of yeast. A bit thin I think, but still very soft. A bit dry in the end.

On tap at the Brooklyn Brewery. Aroma was fruity but kind of faint. Taste was full, slightly toasted, yeasty and enjoyable. Foamy quick dissipating head with a nice lacing. Palate full of flavor and finished nicely with the bitterness of the hops lingering nicely at the back of the mouth.

Very malty. Good head. Rich amber with dry finish. Fruity with classic belgian yeast.
