I enjoyed the natural sugar sweetness mixed well with the malts. spice and yeasty flavor. Medium bodied, I think it could stand up to other true Belgian dubbels. It sure beat out a certain NJ’s brewery’s Abbey Dubbel side by side in my opinion, and I hold the NJ brewery’s Dubbel in high esteem. Dickinsonbeer (2565), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Feb 10, 2005 On tap at the gingerman in nyc. Good fruity and estery aroma with lots of sweetness. Good smooth mouthfeel. Lots of yeasty smells and flavors. Very smooth aftertaste. Kickass dubbel. JoeMcPhee (3899), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Oct 30, 2007 2004 vintage at the Blind Tiger. Deep ruddy brown beer with a thin white head. Aroma is excellent, sweet plums and light caramel, toasted malt and light dried cherry/raisin fruitiness. Light apple and plummy fruit as well. Spicy yeast, some clove and cinnamon. Flavour is a bit less impressive but has lots of caramelized Belgian malt, candi sugar and lots of candied plums, dried fruits and toasted malts. As it warms, some nice banana and smokey phenolics come forward. Sweet but not cloying and surprisingly complex. Good integration of yeasty spice/fruit and malty sweetness. Why they’ve stopped making this, I have no idea. blatantdream (78), New York, New York, USA Jan 22, 2005 On tap at the Brooklyn Brewery. Aroma was fruity but kind of faint. Taste was full, slightly toasted, yeasty and enjoyable. Foamy quick dissipating head with a nice lacing. Palate full of flavor and finished nicely with the bitterness of the hops lingering nicely at the back of the mouth.
