COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Breukelen Abbey Ale a winter seasonal beer, is brewed in the style made famous by the monastery breweries of Belgium. Abbey is made with a blend of nine European malts, and fermented with an imported Belgian yeast. Abbey is a traditionally brewed Belgian "dubbel," a strong russet-brown ale with a spicy aroma reminiscent of chocolate, cloves, dates and figs. It contains one surprising ingredient, sugar. Many Belgian beers are brewed with a type of caramelized rock candy called candii sugar. For Breukelen Abbey Ale, we use raw Dominican sugar from the nearby Domino sugar refinery.

Draft @ Mugs Ale House. Clear brown color with almost no head. Bartender served it in a wide rimmed chalise. Aromas of dried fruits and light yeast. First taste is hoppy right up front which settles into dried fruits and mellow malt. The body seems a bit thin for a dubbel and the alcohol is a kick in the ass right away. I liek the concept of the Brew Master Reserve and hope these improve. I hear this dubbel is much better than the previous version released a few years back.

Given my prior experiences with Brooklyn beer, this one was a bit of a let down. Somewhat tart with quietly subdued malts.

[At Københavnske Øldage 2005, served by Garret Oliver] A red-brown beer with a light brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with some notes of yeast. The flavor is sweet malty and nicely spicy, leading to a dry spicy end. An OK beer, but not as good as most Belgian Dubbels.

Draught at DBF 2005. Dark brown with a off-white head. Sweet malty, fruity aroma and flavor with lots of yeast. A bit thin I think, but still very soft. A bit dry in the end.

dark brown, thin tan head, spicy aroma, rich malt flavor, nice ripe fruit character, mosyly dry, touch of balancing bitterness in the finish, needs a bit more depth but still quite tasty
