Formerly known as Pennant Ale '55...Brooklyn Pennant Pale Ale '55 is a classic English pale ale, brewed with the prized Maris Otter Malt and Fuggles, Willamette and Cascade hops. Maris Otter is an old malt variety that yields an incomparable biscuity flavor. Pennant is chesnut-colored, medium in body with a hearty malt palate and smooth hop finish. This beer is a tribute to Brooklynís world champion baseball team.

A beautiful ale, with textured caramel flavors. Maybe slightly more watery than the Brooklyn Lager. Gorgeous and refreshing, as Brooklyn beers are. This declares it, hands down--Brooklyn is my favorite brewery. Donít know what their process is, but all their beers Iíve tried--most of their major ones--have been incredibly flavorful, creative, and refreshing. Cheers for a sizable ale here.

This brew pours red with i nice thick head. Not a bad brew, but taste is watered down. Aroma is maybe kind of nutty perhaps.

Bottled. Clear reddish brown. Caramelly and clean. Boring brief caramel flavour followed by a short finish with low bitterness. Lifeless and industrial. Is it just me or has this brewery gone downhill?

UPDATED: JUN 18, 2007 Pours chestnut red with orange hues and a foamy tan head. This beer looks great in a glass. Head doesnít last long but does leave some lovely lacing around the edges. Aroma is sweet and malty giving a nosefull of brew-kettle fresh wort, and a trailing after-aroma of fresh hops. Flavor is a little bit less than what I expected, mostly malt, some hops in the finish, but leaves a sour aftertaste, I drank six of these before their expiration date and they all tasted the same. A bit too much carbonation and the sour finish led to a bad mouthfeel. Overall, Iím going to have to say that this is an overrated beer, maybe I just had a bad batch but Iíd expect a beer like this to rate somewhere around the low 40ís. Oh well, Iíll try it on tap when I get a chance to visit the brewery.

In some ways this reminded me of a cross between Bass and Sam Adams Boston Ale. Nice copper/amber color with good caramel malt notes, a distinct fruitiness and a good citric hop presence. Not bad at all and quite easy to drink.

I donít expect "pale ales" to be so un-pale! The color is a lovely soft chestnut, bright ruby tinges at the edges, and a nice cream-toned head stands on top. Aroma is a surprise: slightly toasty, nutty, crisp and clean, but without much in the hop department. Iím surprised also by the taste, where malt plays a predominant role, and hops are hiding in the wings. Delicious finish. Taste is sweet and pretty, body is medium, texture excellent. But wait, the best by date is NOV 02. Thatís in the past! The label says it tastes best before that date, and yet I can find no fault at all! What would a fresh one taste like? I also learn from the label that Maris Otter malt is the cheif ingredient, but I disagree with the part where they call it a "pale ale". Tasted much closer to a brown ale, with a subtler nutty profile. A nice candidate for a session ale.

Bottle @ Brewery. There certainly is a difference between the bottled stuff & the stuff on tap. The bottle is a bit smoother, creamier and a bit maltier. Slightly sweet and sticky. English hop taste with a light straw taste. Clean finishing is the biggest reason I prefer the bottles as well as less carbonation.
