ben4321 (946), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jun 24, 2009 Overall Impression:
I haven’t had one on these in a while, but it is something I remember really enjoying, will have to grab a bottle of this sometime soon and give it a proper rating... Beerapprentice (110), Hopatcong, New Jersey, USA Jun 23, 2009 Pours a pitch black motor oil colour with a thick, foamy beige head. Aroma of dark chocolate-y chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, alcohol, vanilla, roasted malts and some fruit. Flavour is the same as the aroma. Chocolates dominates the palate. Has a bit of a milky mouth feel. chrisv10 (332), Denmark Jun 21, 2009 Bottle. Very black body with small head. Aroma is roasted chocolate as is flavour. Savvy1982 (303), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Jun 19, 2009 Bottle. Pours an inky, oily black that stains the glass. Nose is big roast coffee and chocolate, and with a very noticable hop presence. Palate is big, tight, lean and oily. Chocolate, alcohol, acid, some fruit. Very big, mean, and intimidating, but still very good. lordsummerisle (17), New York, USA Jun 18, 2009 Tap at Ale House, Vestal, NY. I can find very little fault with this beer. Pours black with off-white head. Aroma is pure chocolatey goodness. Flavor is of chocolate and roasted coffee with other complexities buried in the mix. Goes down nice and smooth and lingers on your tongue. Definitely a favorite of mine. Avengedpoet (325), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jun 18, 2009 Thanks to rustychiles for the bottle of this. Shared this with him post "The Hangover." Pours an inky black, almost still. What head there is is a very dark chocolatey brown. Aroma is bitter chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, and alcohol. The first thing that hits me about the taste is a very unique bitterness; I think the chocolate and the hops were playing together oddly. Fairly smooth beer. Tastes surprisingly alcoholic for only being 10.6% (though not phenolic). I expected more chocolate/vanilla types of flavors out of this, but an overall pretty good RIS. Cirrhosis (607), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 8, 2009 So very black, no light can escape this black hole of color, a large brown cap was produced during pour but completely vanished after a few minutes leaving a black glassy mirror behind. Aroma wasn’t as strong as was expecting, very dark smelling malts, dark bitter chocolate, coffee, slight vanilla and alcohol, smell was ok but could have been better. Tons of coffee in the taste don’t notice any of the 10% alc. Its hidden very well, bakers chocolate is the most dominate flavor and I swear I’m getting a berry flavor at the back of my mouth. Mouth fell is full and thick and has a bit of a chalky feel, after taste is bitter and nutty the lingers for a long while. Overall it good very high quality but not great. larsga (2937), Oslo, Norway Jun 8, 2009 Medium darkish brown lasting head. Apparently opaque black body. Strong chocolatey alcoholic aroma with roasty milky notes. Dry-sweetish alcoholic roasty burnt coffee taste, kind of thinnish, with milky notes. Thinnish body. Softish mouthfeel with considerable alcohol heat. Strong dry alcoholic chocolate aftertaste with hoppy notes. Nice, but too alcoholic for me, which clashes with the chocolate. Burnt taste lingers. Leaves sticky sugars on lips. Approved by girlfriend, no doubt on account of the chocolate and general smoothness. (0.355l bottle, Cuckoo’s Nest Café, Odense.)
