Commercial Description:
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

12oz bottle on UK import. Pours as black as molasses, with a fizzy brown head that settles to resemble the crema of a fine espresso. Aromas of port wine, malt and dried prunes and raisins, with a slight tartness reminiscent of a Belgian sour ale. On the tongue are liquorice, a hint of bitter chocolate, more tart vinous fruit and a dry hoppy note, all followed by a big slug of alcohol and hops, plus roasty malt and more tart fruit. A wonderful complex and chewy beer.

Traded for something on DLD...dont remember what...Pours a good pitch black with a clingy lacing tan head. Aroma matches the flavor with the forefront being chocolate cover cherries with some burnt malt and vanilla thrown in. Not real complex and fairly straight forward throughout. A bit syrupy and sweet, but finishes great. Very good beer.

Big thanks to ucusty. Pours black with a dense coffee-brown head, good retention, glass-coating lace. Aroma isn’t highly pronounced, what’s there is hot, vinous, a big of dust on the end. Flavor is a tatsy faceful of raisiny roasted malts, accompanied alcohol heat. I don’t get much that’s distinctly chocolaty, except perhaps as some smoke on the end. Thick, almost chewy palate, smooth swallow.

Bottle. Poured a deep black colour with a honeycomb looking head. Smell was quite mellow, chocolate and roasted malt. Quite mellow flavour too, for the strength. Sweetness is quite high, alcohol is present but it is pretty hefty in the good stuff. Obvious chocolate, little more dark fruits than some of the other strong stouts I’ve had. A decent brew for sure.

Color is a dark black. When I poured it into my glass it had a very small light brown head about a millimeter in height. When held up to the light it completely opaque. Smell is heavy chocolate with a roasted malt flavor. A light hop smell brings out the sweetness and a bit of a coffee smell as well. Taste is of chocolate but is not too overpowering. It is also a bit bitter taste with a coffee flavor on top of a burnt malt aftertaste. This brew does have that lingering after taste but it is slight and not very strong. It does take a sip or two to get used to. It is bit strong and can overpower you a bit if you are not used to a beer that is this high in ABV. It is worth the try is you like Stouts. I will be harsh on the palette at first but it is a very delicious offering from the Brooklyn Brewing company. I plan to comeback to this again in the future. Serving type: bottle

There ain’t enough superlatives for tis outstanding beer. Black as coal, deep chocolate brown head. Amazingly complex, with a rich, malty texture, but neither heavy nor sickly. The chocolate flavour covers the throat and roof of the mouth and warms the chest as it makes its way down. Yeah, it is a particularly strong, alcoholic ale, but it doesn’t feel as though it’s messing with you, you take it in moderation and not after a skinful of other stuff. I’m so pleased this beer is available in the UK........

Bottle thank to mreusch. Black appearance and small head. Winter 05 bottle. Dark chocolate, sweet malts, caramel, dark fruits, plum, vanilla, and hints of oak. It is very hot, lots of alcohol coming through on both the nose and the palate. It’s good, but the alcohol bothered me.

Bottle. Poured black with a quickly disappearing chocolate brown head. Nice effervesence and lacing in glass. Nose is full of chocolate and roasted malts. Flavor is very smooth roasted malt, bitter chocolate, hints of smoke, wood and vanilla. Finishes somewhat dry. One of the more balanced chocolate stouts I’ve tried.
