COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

UPDATED: JUL 14, 2007 July 2007. Bottle at beerbistro. Black body with a creamy brown head that lacks staying power. Rich "oily" aroma, surprising amount of hops almost overshadows the roast and dark bitter chocolate. Flavour similarly has a lot more hops than I remembered and seems extra bitter paired with a sweet dessert. Dark bitter chocolate notes blend with the hoppy bitterness. Full syrupy body would benefit for a touch more carbonation for my liking (3+). Very good but lacks the rich chocolatey notes I had in my head - perhaps it needs some aging to get there? 7+/3+/7/3+/15 - 3.7 <P>January 2004. Bottle. Pours an opaque black blanket over the glass with a fluffy chocolate milke coloured head that doesn’t stay long. Initial aroma is of alcohol, with a bit of raisin and roast peeking out. Flavour has a fairly strong bitterness to it.Odd roastiness, notes of cocoa more than chocolate. Not quite what I was hoping for, when I set out to aquire it I was looking for more of the chocolate. I actually didn’t find it that roasty, or at least the roastiness was well balanced by the other flavours present. Thank you to IPFreely for picking this bottle up at Premier Gourmet for me. 7/4/7/4/15 - 3.7

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2005 12 oz bottle (2003 version, fairly fresh): pours a thick, dense black with a wonderful dark brown foam. The foam settles into a thin cream around the edges, but leaves tiny bubbles up the sides of the glass. Wonderful roasted fruit aroma - cherries, plums, and raisins. A good bit of alcohol is present as well. The flavour is hugely roasted and bitter, has wonderful vinous qualities and leaves the tongue aching for more. A true gem and a wonderful Christmas present from a great secret Santa: thanks aofoxxy! 9/4/8/3/17
12 oz bottle (2003 version, ~2 years in the celler): viscous, jet black pour with a quickly diminishing dark tan cloud-like head. Aroma hints at sweet milk chocolate (like M&Ms), slightly charred raisins and burnt blueberries. Flavours are deep and dark – chocolate for sure, along with black cherry, currant and charred oak and grain. The roasted bitterness has subdued remarkably transforming this into a strong, session-like, imperial stout. I would to have a 2 year old six pack that I could split with a buddy and drink for a relaxing evening – and it would be perfect if it was snowing… 8/4/9/4/17

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2011 Deep, dry and dark. A full imperial stout that masks its alcohol better than most others. A nice winter brew. Strong and a bit heavy with chocolate and a hint of roastiness, nuts, coffee, and malt.

Probiere (992) - Iowa, USA - JAN 1, 2004
Dry and dusty finish, super dark coffee-looking-blacker-than-a-black-night sitting in my glass. Less chocolate than I excpected, but what chocolate it is: super bitter 85% cacao Serotta comes to mind. Thinner body than I like but still interesting and complex.

Beautiful dark tan head. Nice malty, mocha, chocolate aroma. Good flavor. Chololate and coffee. Soft sweet finish. Slight hops, but could go for more.

by BeerFinancier (390.6) who gave it 4.05 / 5 Pours jet black with a browinish head of substance and depth. This head is here to stay awhile, apparenly. Aroma isn't big, and this beer is being served at around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Roasty notes domintate, with a tad of burnt liquorice somewher in there. Mouthfeel is medium, this beer is smooth and creamy on the palate. Light chocolate notes, sweet roasted malt and well done toast. A nice beer, albeit not something I can drink a lot of. I recommend it however, for those cold nights by the fire.

I didn't pour enough of a head to comment on it... it's dark, so dark that a goth could completely honestly say "it's as black as my soul" - which I found, as a goth, I had to say to rudolf and qwak. Utterly delicious, many thanks to rudy and qwak for their recommendations of this beer.

Black coloured with light brown head. Loads of chocolate and coffee in the aroma and in the flavour. Creamy texture. Full bodied. Some hops in the finish.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2007 Nice black beer with beautiful dark tan head. Dried fruit aroma. Licorice and anise dominate the taste. Lightly carbonated. Very subtle chocolate flavor. How is this an imperial and (imho) why is this beer so highly regarded? I’m still waiting to have one that makes me go "wow".
