watson1977 (250), , Pennsylvania, USA Dec 28, 2008 Updated: Feb 13, 2009tried this one again with a 2 year old bottle. aged version did not retain the head at all. aroma had more dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee and burnt characterisitics. flavor displays the same and has some barleywine-like qualities as well as a subtle vanilla bourbon quality. mouthfeel is still sticky but it has lost some of the co2 pop..........first rating-completely black and thick looking with a coffee colored head on it that retained well but i could smell the alcohol in the aroma. i felt the hops and alcohol overpowered the chocolate and burnt toffee notes but the beer was young (this year) so some bottle conditioning might mellow this out...(7,4,4,4,15) BeerBunker (599), Burbank, Illinois, USA Dec 28, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma is of hops, alcohol, chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste was of strong bitter hops, with a nice roasted malt backbone. Notes of chocolate, caramel, dark fruits. The hops really make this one stand out from other stouts. Huge alcohol burn. Thick, sticky mouthfeel but this beer retains its drinkability. Damned good. danielcurtis81 (879), San Diego, California, USA Dec 28, 2008 Bottle. Pours a rich black. Sweet nose. Flavor is rich with dark chocolate and roasted malt. Mouth with creamy. Nice desert beer. jjrice997 (9), , New York, USA does not count Dec 27, 2008 An extremely smooth stout. Rich and delicate with a strong and exquisite flavor. Definitely one of my favorite stouts. darn1207 (528), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Dec 25, 2008 I have tried this on draft a few times now and liked it a lot. rating from 12oz bottle. black pour with a finger or so tan head and some stick to it. aroma is dark fruits and chocolate. chewy medium to thick texture. like others seem to be saying - alcohol is fairly evident throughout - but not in bad way for me. sweet malt and dark fruits in the taste. smoke and hop bitterness in the long finish. good stuff. K-8.5 miketd (679), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Dec 25, 2008 Pours black with a huge brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Flavor is too hot for my taste but it also has dark roasted chocolate. Big palate and lively carbonation. I guess my only problem is the big alcohol. It works for some beers, and not others. It doesnt ruin this brew for me but it doesnt help either. Paul150 (37), , Georgia, USA Dec 25, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with slight head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Nice, thick body yet smooth. Alcohol is noticeable but not overpowering, and the sweet, highly roasted malts take control of the taste. An amazing offering. boFNjackson (1233), Portland, Oregon, USA Dec 24, 2008 Tap... Poured black with amber highlights and a light brown head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate with roasted characters. Thick, syrupy palate that had a smooth texture. A little bit of alcohol for a nice kick that was balanced by sweet almond, chocolate, and malt & hops. Sort of like Abyss of the Northeast.
