Commercial Description:
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

Bottle. 08 offering. Pours just like the name says, black and chocolaty, with a soft and small tan head, the color of powdered cocoa, which vanishes rather quickly. Aromas of roasted malt and a hint of bitter cocoa greet the nose, along with a bit of alcohol that distracts from everything else. Body is medium thick and full of very fine carbonation. Finish is gently bitter and long lasting with a touch of warming alcohol notes. I’ll be interested to see how this does in a year or so.

12oz bottle. Pours opaque black with small mocha head. Taste of dark chocolate with sweet malts, dark fruit, and a hint of coffee. Mouthfeel is thinner than most other Imperials. Alcohol is discreet at first, then becomes more intense as the temperature increases. Nice beer.

Black pour with one finger tan head. The elegant label is one of the better ones from this brewery. Very rich aroma of coffee, malt, hops, esters, and chocolate cake. The flavor is full and complex, as much like an extreme porter as an imperial stout. The flavor has coffee, tobacco, strong hops, and some astringency, ;lus something that sems salty, like broth. There is a little cocoa, but not as much as I have had in other chocolate brews. I liked the peppery tingle in the aftertaste. Really really good, and the best thing I have had yet out of Brooklyn.

aroma of roast and alcoholic zing. flavor of dark roast and cocoa with a hell of a kick, booze is up front in this one. light cannot penetrate this one even one iota, mouthfeel is almost standard for the style, doesnt quite coat and hang out like some do. this is a great relaxer and an awesome big beer, but the emphasis on heat is a bit much.<P> 2007 (aged one year)-nose of oak and vanilla, very soothing silky mouthfeel. flavor is of huge vanilla and some cocoa, much improved from fresh product

Very boozy, fruity aromas, I detect hints of chocolate and cherry. Pours black with fluffy tan head, leaves great lacing behind. Nicely carbonated on the tongue with a boozy bitter chocolate finish. Would drink again!

Thanks to ucusty for this one! 07-08 bottle Pours a very thick opaque black with about a centimeter of disappearing chocolate colored head and lingering lacing. Smells alcoholic, sweet, dark fruits, baking chocolate Flavor is strong - sweet malts up front, with chocolate bitterness, some dark fruits, lingering hop/chocolate bitterness and smoke palate - thick and boozy This is a very good stout, but the alcohol is rather more apparent and hot than would be ideal.

Flavors of chocolate and mocha combine in this completely opaque, black stout. A soothing smokiness emerges after having a couple sips. Alcohol flavor is detectable - probably not too surprising given the high percentage. The aroma evokes chocolate of course, but also has a burnt coffee fragrance. The taste is sweet and the texture is thick with just a little carbonation. The finish is delectably smooth.

A dark, smooth pour. Aroma of hazelnut and alcohol. Smooth and creamy with a balance of dark chocolate, licorice, and coffee notes. Alcohol not overwhelming. An ideal imperial style.
