Aroma is of hops, alcohol, chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste was of strong bitter hops, with a nice roasted malt backbone. Notes of chocolate, caramel, dark fruits. The hops really make this one stand out from other stouts. Huge alcohol burn. Thick, sticky mouthfeel but this beer retains its drinkability. Damned good. danielcurtis81 (883), San Diego, California, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 25, 2008 I have tried this on draft a few times now and liked it a lot. rating from 12oz bottle. black pour with a finger or so tan head and some stick to it. aroma is dark fruits and chocolate. chewy medium to thick texture. like others seem to be saying - alcohol is fairly evident throughout - but not in bad way for me. sweet malt and dark fruits in the taste. smoke and hop bitterness in the long finish. good stuff. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 25, 2008 Pours black with a huge brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Flavor is too hot for my taste but it also has dark roasted chocolate. Big palate and lively carbonation. I guess my only problem is the big alcohol. It works for some beers, and not others. It doesnt ruin this brew for me but it doesnt help either. Paul150 (37), , Georgia, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Dec 25, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with slight head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Nice, thick body yet smooth. Alcohol is noticeable but not overpowering, and the sweet, highly roasted malts take control of the taste. An amazing offering. boFNjackson (1262), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 24, 2008 Tap... Poured black with amber highlights and a light brown head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate with roasted characters. Thick, syrupy palate that had a smooth texture. A little bit of alcohol for a nice kick that was balanced by sweet almond, chocolate, and malt & hops. Sort of like Abyss of the Northeast. j12601 (1181), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 23, 2008 Bottle. 08 offering. Pours just like the name says, black and chocolaty, with a soft and small tan head, the color of powdered cocoa, which vanishes rather quickly. Aromas of roasted malt and a hint of bitter cocoa greet the nose, along with a bit of alcohol that distracts from everything else. Body is medium thick and full of very fine carbonation. Finish is gently bitter and long lasting with a touch of warming alcohol notes. I’ll be interested to see how this does in a year or so.
