nramsburg (200), New York, New York, USA Nov 29, 2008 Whoa, this is a big beer.
Pours to an engine-oil colored dark brown/black with a thick, lasting tan head. On the nose you definitely get some chocolate, but it’s preceded by dark chocolate and hints of liqueur -- think chocolate covered cherries.
On the palate this beer is big and syrupy, a serious winter offering. While it’s certainly malty to begin with, it finishes with smokey malt.
An amazing, complex and exciting beer. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Nov 28, 2008 12oz bottle, ’07 version. Every other time I’ve tried this one it’s been fresh and way too boozy. First time trying a one-year. Pours black with a minimal off-white head. Aroma of bourbon, malt, dark fruit and chocolate. Now to taste: WOW! One year is all this beer needed. Dark fruit tartness up front, followed by a burst of chocolate. Nice bourbon/coffee finish. Outstanding. JCastner (102), New York, USA Nov 28, 2008 Updated: Dec 9, 2008Dark syrupy pour with a caramel colored head. Aroma is of chocolate, caramel, figs, raisins, and a bit of orange. Wonderful. Taste is first of chocolate, fruit and then finishes with a dry smoky coffee finish. Warming alcohol. Not a session beer. Great on a cold night next to a warm fire. taalhiker (179), Dayton, Ohio, USA Nov 28, 2008 From bottle. Part of January Dayton Beer Tasting event. Pour nearly black with dark latte colored head. Aromas of dark chocolate and malt. A fine blend of flavors coat your mouth - roasted nuts, espresso, and cocoa. Long pleasing finish with the alcohol just peeking through a little. High quality at a great price. Good job Garrett. thejoeshow (232), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Nov 27, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a thick opaque black with a very silky tan head that lingers very nicely and leave beautiful lacing. Aroma is a very pleasant dark chocolate with a touch of sweet, almost banana and just s hint of alcohol. Amazing. Flavor is nice blend of dark chocolate and roasted malts. The roasted flavors linger at the end bit. This is a very balanced beer. It is velvety smooth and doesn’t feel like motor oil in your mouth, a very nice departure for a RIS. Wonderful...absolutely worth seeking out. Snoop59 (69), Penn Run, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 27, 2008 Updated: Dec 3, 200812 oz. bottle. Pours a dark black with a thick frothy tan head that lasts throughout. Incredible lacing. The aroma is of chocolate, roasted malt, and very subtle fruity esters. Initial flavor is a short, sweetness with wonderful roasted, almost toasty malt balanced by the bitterness of cocoa. Finishes dry with a nice warming. Full bodied. Medium carbonation. bretupdegraff (172), Fishers, Indiana, USA Nov 26, 2008 Sweet chocolate aroma with some dark fruit ; nice bi-colored creamy head
with nice lacing that just sticks to the glass
well carbonated for this style which makes for a nice thick mouthfeel - you just chew this beer
flavor is a little ’hot’ but full of flavor - this one should age very well.
Awesome brew! dogfish120love (250), west hartford, Connecticut, USA Nov 26, 2008 Pour a deep brown, but appears black. The head is a frothy coffee with cream color. The scent is heaby with alcohol, bitter chocolate and malt. the f lavor is very rich and consists of bitter chocolate, cofee, and roasted malt. Not bad but different than most imperial stouts in its bitterness.
