Commercial Description:
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

2007 chocolate stout, nice, smooth mix between the chocolate malts and the alcohol, really didn’t taste much of the fruit matls like others but wasn’t overpowering, nor did it have that syrupy taste, the alcholo was present and had a nice, smooth after taste, my favorite of all the chocolate stouts

11/22/07 notes: 12oz bottle. Intense aroma of alcohol, cocoa and coffee. Alcohol unmistakable (it is 10.6%), but bold flavor, hint of chocolate, and dark fruit. Palate is thick, and slightly grainy. I really wanted to like this, but there is just too much alcohol awkwardly exposed in finish to be truly awesome. I must say though, the body with its intense chocolate, creamy malts, roasty notes, and soft malty base is phenomenal . .

2005 Black Chocolate Stout. Capital Ale House pairing with Garrett Oliver 05/15/08. Dark Opaque with some nice lacing on the glass. Rich roast and chocolate malt aroma with some wet wood. Dark rich roast with chocolate and raisin. Medium mouthfeel with a dry bitter finish. This was paired with coffee encrusted venison and blue cheese mashed potatoes. Absolutely fantastic.

(On tap) Rich, hearty, aromatic. Hardly bitter at all. Only a mild roast is present. A bit more like wine than beer, except with a rich caramel quality. While I would appreciate more bitterness, and while the alcohol is not well masked, I think that overall, this is a pretty good beer. I do not, however, think that it warrants the high ratings that it has been given. I notice a tendency of reviewers to give higher ratings to beers with high alcohol contents regardless of taste. I simply don’t think this beer has the flavour to back up its strength in abv. It is rich, but it hardly has any bitterness, and in my opinion, this leaves it lacking. I simply cannot taste any hops at all, and I barely taste the roast. And it does come across as too heavy.

Strong chocolate and coffee flavors with alcohol taste in the background. Dark brown with a nice tan head that fades after a bit. My biggest complaint is that it is seasonal and I am drinking my last one. I wish I had more self control.

12 oz. bottle. Very dark toasted malt aroma with coffee and/or chocolate. Black color with a respectable tan head. Thin to medium body with coarsely creamy carbonation. Flavor is burnt malt, but sweet, with a light creosote note. Milk chocolate hides behind the burnt malt. The finish is smooth, fairly dry, with a creamy burnt flavor. In the end it’s burnt and lightly bitter. Never had an IS like this. Sweet chocolate comes forth more noticeably as time passes. The alcohol is totally hidden. Puts the craft in craft ale.

This is a pretty solid beer that really does age well. 12 oz. bottle: Pours a oil dark black, very thin dark tan ring around the edges. Aroma and flavor of roasted chocolate malt, smooth vanilla undertones and a powerful alcoholic bite. Nom nom nom.
