lightning9191 (82), Christiansburg, Virginia, USA Mar 6, 2008 Updated: Apr 12, 2008Aroma is malty and sweet with some winey characteristics. The beer pours with little head formation, but what does form sticks around for awhile. Color is jet black......my favorite! Flavor is chocolately, malty, and roasty. You can taste the alcohol, but I don’t find it overwhelming. This beer is full-bodied, almost chewy. I really enjoy this beer and may be my favorite. chandler0201 (341), Durham, North Carolina, USA Mar 6, 2008 Aroma of chocolate and coffee, and a great chocolate-y taste that reminded me a bit of coffee and truffles. Very smooth for such a high alcohol percentage beer. lemasney (398), Trenton, New Jersey, USA Mar 5, 2008 Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
ABV: 10.6%
IBU:
Volume: 12 fl oz
Glass: tulip
Purchased at: Princeton Community Liquor
Consumed on: Wednesday, March 5th, 2008
sensory first impression: Beautiful to behold - rich deep wet sandy head. Head thins out quickly, but aroma is overwhelming. Utterly black - light does not penetrate. First taste is almost syrupy, but also rich in dark roasted malt flavor. You must sip this. Attention is on the back upper roof of the mouth. Back of the tongue. Very bitter and nicely so. Sweetness balances after a moment. A very tasty ride.
Aroma/Olfactory:
Malt is roasted, chocolate, cream and caramel. It reminds me of a chocolate lava cake with rich chocolate truffles. It’s wonderful.
Hops are slightly grassy, and very present - they fight for attention through the chocolate, syrup, and sweetness.
Yeast/Bacteria hints of pillows, pine, plastic, and sweaters. All clean.
Alcohol, wood, licorice, and butterscotch come and go. The alcohol is primary and sweeping in the flavor.
Visuals/Appearance:
black and vibrating. Scary.
Liquid is active and bubbly, especially for a stout.
Head/Lace is minimal, and a beautiful wet sandy brown.
Taste/Flavor:
Maltiness/Sweetness is rather heavy, but welcome.
Hoppiness/Bitterness is medium to heavy. Very nice.
Sour not at all.
Chocolate and hops. Lovely.
Palate/Tactile:
Body/Mouthfeel is full and heavy.
Texture is not thin, which would be a detractor for me, and is what I expect of stouts in general. Surprisingly creamy, and thick.
Carbonation is above average for a stout.
Finish is long and luxurious.
Overall second impression: Wow - I love this brewery. Brooklyn is so very available, and yet so affordable and special. This stout is another of my favorites, without the presumptuousness of Rogue. Though, I absolutely love Rogue. henk21 (5), Sweden does not count Mar 2, 2008 oh very nice! smell is so great and the taste leaves you weak in admiration of the chocolate malt and the brewers at brooklyn surffisher (194), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Mar 1, 2008 12 oz. 07-08 bottle. Pours black with leathery brown highlights and a small dark brown head. Aroma of deep roasted malts, dark sweet chocolate, currants, licorice, even a little wood. Smooth, well-balanced flavor featuring the malty, chocolaty, and dark fruity notes in the aroma. Dry on balance, but not bitter. Medium full-bodied with moderate fine carbonation and only good alcohol warming on the finish. A bit syrupy, but overall very drinkable. Excellent imperial stout...a classic brew. pumpmaster (473), Pembroke Pines, Florida, USA Mar 1, 2008 12 ounce bottle purchased at Case & Keg Boca Raton, FL for $2.25 Excellent! Bungalo22 (326), Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA Mar 1, 2008 Updated: Mar 26, 2008Outstanding especially when left to sit out for a bit and warm. Creamy and frothy on pour - dark like the night. You can almost lap it up when it is on your town. Has a roasty flavor and after taste with hints of a dark Chocolate. Beware the alcohol content it will grab you eventually because all you will want to do is keep drinking it. thooper41 (384), Oregon, USA Mar 1, 2008 12oz bottle thanks to kramer17801: pours pitch black with small tan head, aroma has decent amount of chocolate malt and hint of hops. flavor imimics the aroma pretty close, very full flavored not to much hop for a stout very well made beer.
