Commercial Description:
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

When I first opened this beer, I decided it was too thin and too weak flavored to be served as an intro into chocolate beer to the public at my bar. I stuffed it under a shelf in my cooler and left it for reduction in cooking...Cocoa chili maybe. Almost a year later, I was cleaning out the cooler and found it. As i was thirsty, I cracked one open. WOW! what a different beer this was from a year prior. The chocolate smell filled the cooler, and the foam bubbling from the bottle was a rich milk chocolate brown. Quickly grabbing a glass, I poured the rest and began to admire this beer for all it was worth. The lacing was thick and stuck to the glass like a curtain. The flavor was rich chocolate with dark fruits embedded deep within it, the finish was roasted coffee and toffee combined. Wonderful beer, I’m glad I cellared this one, I’m keeping a few from this case reserved, so I can continue aging it. This beer goes high on my list.

12oz single bottle purchased from Clarendon Wines in Boston for around $2.70 or so. Pours a thick rich black with a small but rich brown head that doesn’t stick around for long. Strong aroma of malt and molasses - you can almost smell the alcohol. Flavour is thick and rich - almost a bit syrupy. Not much in the way of chocolate.

(2007-06-08, Bottle Winter 06-07, 9.6 %) Pours a black colourwith a thin brown head. Very tempting nose with notes of chocolate, figs soaked in port, blackcurrant, roasted coffee beans and molasses. The flavour profile starts with some sweetness - chocolate and dried fruits - followed by a burnt taste. This is heavy stuff! You can feel the alcohol, but it is well integrated with the other flavours. The finish is roasted malts and bitter hops. Good stuff and a great QPR! (8/4/8/4/18).

(2008-03-19, Bottle Winter 07-08, 10.6%) Colour: Pours a black colour with a dark beige head. Aroma: Roasted malts and coffee beans, chocolate, some dried fruits and some refreshing notes as well. Flavour is quite sweet with notes of roasted malts and coffee beans, some sweet dried fruits and (semi) dark chocolate. Quite thin on the mid-palate - but then returns with bitter dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, black peppar, a hint of alcohol and a large bitterness. Not as good as I remember winter 06-07. (8/4/7/3/16).

=(8/4/7/4/17).

black pour with no real head just a thin layer of froth up top. malts and licorice on the nose along with raisins and some dried fruits. very thick and a flavor that i can’t really describe but the chocolate really kicks in during the aftertaste.

Bottle. Black with a fairly small sand-colored head that sits there for the whole beer. Not overpowering, pleasant aroma of roasted malts, coffee, and a bit of chocolate. The chocolate was more understated in the flavor than I was expected, as well, not that that’s a knock on the beer. The high alcohol content is very well hidden, the coffee and chocolate flavors blend very well, and it’s a smooth drinking imperial stout. Great beer.

2006/07 vintage, poured from 12oz. bottle into a tulip snifter A: If you were submerged in a vat of this beer, I imagine it’d be akin to being blind, that’s how dark this is. Pours like motor oil, with slight ruby edges, just about 100% opaque. A lovely 2-finger dark beige head rises up and begins to immediately leave decent lacing. S: Smells like a steaming cup of hot chocolate, only it’s cold. I detect sweet fig newtons, some roasted breads, plums & dates, and of course, rich chocolate and cocoa! As it warms, it takes on some minor sherry-like aromas as well. T/M: Bam! Rich, rich chocolate and cocoa right up front, I’m talking huge, chunky chocolate flavors, rich like truffles. The roasted malts are right in your face, and as the beer warms, the dark fruits - raspberries & cherries mostly - begin to develop. An intoxicating bittersweet cocoa finishes things up. This beer is thick, viscous and chewy, with just the right amount of carbonation, just like a brilliant RIS should be. D: This beer is awesome x 1,000. It’s actually too easy to drink, a dangerous sign given the 10+% ABV. Go easy (but get some)!
