enenalan (21), Linden, New Jersey, USA Feb 9, 2008 There we go!! This stout is pretty much everything I look for in a dessert beer. Deep, thick, black on the pour with a thin head. Flavor is overwhelming chocolate with roasted malt. Very well-balanced. I’m not sure where they hid the 10.6% ABV. It’s practically unnoticable. Excellent stuff. doubleo (1096), San Diego, California, USA Feb 8, 2008 Winter 07-08 Release. Pours a thick black color with a thin but vibrant looking brown head that fades somewhat slowly. Very subdued nose to this brew. I don’t get much more than faint toasty malt smells. Taste is different than I’ve had before. At first it tasted so toasty that it almost seemed burned. Now as it warms slightly the sweetness of the malts really comes forward. Not that chocolatey at all, I only taste a hint of chocolate on the finish. Thick, full mouthfeel, nice carbonation. Just how a stout should be. blipp (1612), Newark, New Jersey, USA Feb 8, 2008 Updated: Dec 25, 2008ReRate of the 08/09 bottle. Pours near black with a thin brown head. Aroma of dark chocolates, roasted malts, and some dark fruitiness. The flavor has roasted malt, creamy dark chocolate, toasted bread, and a touch of smoke. Very very good this year. For the record, the 07/08 bottle I had (also fresh) was awful, although It may have aged well. 07/08 got 6/5/3/3/6 for 2.3 total. hoposaurus (3), Carbondale, Illinois, USA does not count Feb 7, 2008 Nice malt character balanced by bittersweet chocolate roastiness. Velvety mouthfeel. Very nice. craftycarl21 (510), South Hero, Vermont, USA Feb 7, 2008 very nice aroma- the chocolate is clearly present. fantastic taste- chocolate with nice malt taste, delicious overall. palate is very strong, great duration to the mouthfeel. excellent beer, even for a stout. excellent. Hawksfan17 (717), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 5, 2008 I lost my notepad so this is all on memory. Pours black with a chocolate head. Notes of sweet and semi-sweet chocolate. The flavor is light and sweet and then followed by robust roasted flavors. Overall this is nice and clean and hides the alcohol well. StFun (535), Indiana, USA Feb 4, 2008 Updated: Mar 11, 2009This thing smells like chocolate through and through. Pours an inky black with just a hint of a head and inky lacing. Flavor is not *quite* what I was hoping for, just a little too bitter. A good mix of coffee, fruits, hops, and chocolate in this one. The chocolate taste is there, but this is much more an Imperial than a dessert beer. But this is still a delciious treat, and I would drink this anytime. juiceisloose (634), Windermere, Florida, USA Feb 4, 2008 Updated: Sep 26, 2008This one poured a dark black color that poured out very thick with a small tan head that disappeared quickly. The aroma is very rich of dark and milk chocolate with a good amount of roasted malts and hint of caramel sweetness as well. The flavor follows suit with all the flavors of rich dark chocolate and milk chocolate flavors. The roasted malts and caramel flavors are blended in as well with hints of coffee bitterness on the back end. The body is medium to almost full with a touch of carbonation and bitterness and goes down very smooth. This stout is very easy drinking with a nice chocolate roasty finish. I really liked this one. I can’t wait to try it on draft.
