georgehog (18), Delaware, USA Jan 16, 2008 Recently had on draft. Looks like a stout with nice head and foam retention. Smeels like roasted barley, chocolate, and alcohol. The taste is where the let down was for me. Overpowering higher alcohol taste that almost stings on the way down. There is roast and chocolate there but hard to decipher through the alcohol. hoppopotamus (182), Santa Cruz, California, USA Jan 15, 2008 Winter ’07-’08 bottle from bodega blocks from the Brewery. Pours opaque black with a tan head that’s gone before the rest of the beer. Aroma of coffee and roasted barley, a little chocolatey. The taste starts slightly sweet with molasses and chocolate, then you get a bit more bitter, dry, charred and very long finish with a bit of alcohol warmth (dark chocolate all the way through). The palate is amazing, the taste fills your whole mouth instantly. Great stout! BossHossBikes (147), Tennessee, USA Jan 15, 2008 Oh yes... oh yes... my first beer in weeks. After being quite sick for a couple weeks and taking medicine that hindered me from drinking, I’ve finally cracked open a beer. I will have to say that this is my first official beer of 2008. My last one was not enjoyed to its extent due to the fact that my taste buds were operating sub-par. But now, on with this tasting! Ah, what a good beer to start my long wait. It pours like motor oil, viscous and black. The head is a very velvety medium tan head. Mmm, the aroma has strong hints of molasses and some nice strong charred noted. Espresso is a little subtle. The cocoa aroma is quite dominant creating a dry, bitter bouquet. Once this brew came in contact with my taste buds, I was completely overwhelmed with a blast of flavour. Then again, I hadn’t had a beer in two weeks. Molasses and espresso is dominant in the initial flavour. As the brew passes the tongue, I notice the creamy consistency as the roasty espresso bursts a little more and the cocoa explodes. The finish is bitter and dry like pure cocoa but has a really slight sweetness to it. Ah, man, I’m so glad I’ve conquered my sickness. Miver (550), WillowStreet, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 15, 2008 On draft at State Line. Poured midnight black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted dark chocolate malts and hints of roasted coffee. The taste was of smooth creamy yet roasted chocolate. It comes off a little sweet but the bitterness balances it nicely. The alcohol is hidden very well. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Jan 14, 2008 Winter 06-07
1/14/2008: Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout is nearly black in color, opaque, and has a foamy brown head. The aroma is like fine Belgian dark chocolate with some smooth and subtle espresso undertones. This beer has an extremely well-balanced flavor that includes expensive dark chocolate, roasted malts, caramelized malts, and some coffee. The flavor in the finish is like chocolate covered expresso beans. The dark, bittersweet chocolate and roasty flavors do an excellend job of masking the alcohol content. Blackstrap molasses, roasted malts, and some alcohol become more evident as the beer warms. This full-bodied brew is extremely smooth and creamy. It really does have a great palate! I really have forgotten how good this beer is. On top of that, it ages so well! This beer is why I have always loved the Brooklyn Brewery so much!
12 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 10.6% by Vol.). Rating #1284 for this beer...
scottw86 (180), Maryland, USA Jan 14, 2008 Updated: Sep 12, 2008Poured black as promised with a small dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate malts. Flavor is one of the best stouts I’ve had. The chocolate malt flavor is very strong, but it is still smooth. The alcohol is noticeable in the aftertaste. Overall, a great stout! mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 14, 2008 [1005-20071225] 12floz (c/o tuqueboy). Sweet roasty malt aroma has a hint of hops. Dark black brown body with quick tan bubbles. Coffee sweet molasses flavour has a fruity finish. Full body. Nice, a bit sweet, was expecting more chocolate. gearbike (413), West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA Jan 13, 2008 Can’t see a thru this glass after pour. Roasted malts with a strong choclate taste. Such wonderful choclate it almost tastes sweet even though you can tell it is rather bitter.
