Commercial Description:
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

(Bottle, winter 08-09) Black colour with frothy, brown head. Malty, roatsed nose with chocolate, liquorice, dark rye bread, sweet espresso and a heavy, syrupy molassess sweetness. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, strong black coffee, liquorice, dark rye bread and dried fruit. Generous amounts of coffee/cocoa bitterness in the finish, accompanied by a sweet, warming touch of alcohol. Full body, fairly sweet. Perhaps slightly out of balance, but still a very nice beer.

Pours black with a creamy, dense, mocha-colored head. Poured without a sound - this stuff is seriously thick. Aroma has roasty coffee, bitter cacao, molasses and a great hop counter. It has a wonderful balance, which translates to the flavor. It’s certainly thick - wonderful mouthfeel - and if it weren’t so dang boozy it might be close to perfect. The alcohol takes away from it a bit, even with all those ingredients. Rum, chocolate, fresh coffee... this is dessert in a glass - delicious - but the booziness really does bring it down a notch or two. I can see this being utterly fantastic after a few years in a cellar. Really, really tasty... just needs to mellow out a bit.

On Tap at B-dubs Downtown. Pours deep black with creamy, foamy 1/2 in tan head that thins out eventually, but continues to provide a covering throughout the lifespan of the liquid being in my glass, which was not long mind you once I started sipping. Aromas of dark bitter chocolate, oats, rich roasted malt. Flavor is smooth, creamy and very appealing to the palate. Lots of dark chocolate and dark malts become the main players. Goes down smooth with a thick texture. Alcohol is very well hidden. Wonderful tasting beer!

Tap at Flying Saucer Houston. Black with a brown head. Smells of roasted malt and maybe some chocolate. Taste is of coffee and roasted malt with a strong bitter finish. Not much chocolate in the taste.

On tap at flying saucer. Pours a very dark brown with a medium frothy tan head that leaves good sticky lacong along the glass. The aroma is roasted malt with dark chocolate and caramel. Thin mouthfeel with a roasted chocolate malt taste and alcohol very present with a nice bitter finish. A very impressive imperial stout from brooklyn.

15-AUG-2009, bottle @home. 2005 bottle, the last of a stash I have been enjoying over the last few years. Black with no head at all. Nice roasted nose with lots of bitter chocolate. The chocolate is there in the flavor as well. The chocolate has turned more bitter with age, but it is still there. Quite sweet, and oily, nice mouthfeel. This was one of the first beers that turned me from wine to beer. I think I still prefer the fresh version, so I will need to rerate this some time.

Très, très chocolatée. Beaucoup d’amertume. On retrouve un léger goût de café vite estompé par le fort goût amer du chocolat. Bonne bièere de fin de soirée.
