noelcb (271), Toledo, Ohio, USA Nov 24, 2006 Excellent. Brooklyn products are only recently available here in Toledo, so I was antiipating this one for a while. It was worth the wait. Poured midnight black in an imperial pint glass with a rich, foamy tan head, leaving nice lacing as I emptied the glass. Complex aroma included elements of dark roast malt, smoke, peat, espresso, cocoa, cherries and strawberries, floral and herbal hops, and a touch of vanilla. Taste followed -- beefy toasted malt, toffee, molasses, coffee, chocolate, hops and acidic fruit. Mouthfeel was dead-on for an IS. TRY THIS BEER!
bconley (82), Fern Park, Florida, USA Nov 30, 2008 On tap at Red Light Red Light. REALLY Nice. Pours BLACK. This is like a chocolate, malty milkshake. Nice cherry hints. Definite coffee and nutty tastes. Nice and roasty. Wish I could drink this on a cold night...but we don’t have many of those here in Orlando. llbjr77 (70), Largo, Florida, USA Nov 30, 2008 Pours a dark black color with a small tan head. Strong chocolate taste with a mix of malts, and slight fruity taste. A typical stout in style, but freat tasting. Alcohol is masked by the strong chocolate flavor. Great for the this time of year. Will drink again. johnnyoski (46), Macomb, Michigan, USA Nov 30, 2008 12oz bottle: pours a deep black color with small light-brown head. Aroma is not as strong as I was expecting...light hints of alcohol and smokey cocoa. Initial taste of sweet fruit, black licorice and dark chocolate. Finishes warm with a raisin and alcohol taste. A dry, roasted malt sensation lingers. This is definitely full body but not excessively heavy. Enjoyable, but I was expecting to detect more chocolate aroma & flavor since thats what the label advertises. I’ll age the rest of these and try again next year. lawbagada (5), , Maryland, USA does not count Nov 29, 2008 I’m in the minority here. It is a well crafted beer, but you have to like the style to like the beer. That said, this beer delivers a rich taste that stays with the drinker. My favorite after dinner beer, but one is all I need. I fine beer to serve with desert with a good cigar. nramsburg (154), New York, New York, USA Nov 29, 2008 Whoa, this is a big beer.
Pours to an engine-oil colored dark brown/black with a thick, lasting tan head. On the nose you definitely get some chocolate, but it’s preceded by dark chocolate and hints of liqueur -- think chocolate covered cherries.
On the palate this beer is big and syrupy, a serious winter offering. While it’s certainly malty to begin with, it finishes with smokey malt.
An amazing, complex and exciting beer.
