Commercial Description:
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

Virtually black and syrupy-thick with caramel color hinting around the edges, headless except for an oily ring after a fizzy head. All sorts of chocolate in the aroma from light milk to dark semi-sweet. Sugars and alcohol highly apparent. Flavor finds thick chocolate with just a slight move to bitterness in the finish with a hit of coffee.

Pitch black with a brown creamy head. Deep rich malty chocolate aroma. Very rich chocolate burnt grain flavor. Body is thinner then you would expect but still big. The tongue experiences a nice alcohol burn. Bitter chocolate is the dominate aftertaste. This is a very good beer.

12oz bottle acquired from IrishBoy in a trade. Winter ’05-’06 bottling. Pours an almost motor oil black into my Duvel glass with a ring of tan head. Aroma of soy (the first aroma I got, though not the strongest), big dark chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, slight grain, raisins, and alcohol. There is some initial tang from the soy quality, then some sweetness, and ends up roasty and bitter. Tastes basically how it smells. Quite a heavy beer, thick creamy mouthfeel, moderate carbonation. Very good. Side note: I was eating some dark chocolate with this, the soy gets quite strong and I get some sour cherries with it.

Poured a black brew with a thin brown head that disappeared quickly. The aroma was sweet and malty, very complex, alcohol, coffee, and molasses (?). Tasted very roasted, sweet, chocolate, and coffee. Very complex taste. The palate was thick and very textured. The finish was great, there was very little alcohol showing through. The finish also had hints of chocolate and coffee. I had this along with Victory’s Storm King Imperial Stout and this was by far the superior brew. I would highly recommend it. It’s a lot less hoppy and much more so a complex malt beer (which I very much prefer).

Winter 07-08 vintage. Jet black with a small head that lasts. Wood, coffee, molasses and chocolate aromas. Tastes of espresso flavored with cocoa, dried wood chips, some charred coffee bean, and alcohol. Nice combination of flavors, but the alcohol and roast are a bit harsh. Probably would come together better with some age. Medium-heavy body is smooth at first then kind of rough and fizzy.

Poured from the bottle at The White Horse on Parsons Green (London, a dark black with a tan head. Chocolate aroma with some bitter notes. The alcohol is quite strong in the taste, along with a short bitterness that works well with the chocolate and roasted coffee flavours. The chocolate comes through more and more and it warms. A great end of the night drink.
