| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 21, 2004 Updated: Mar 22, 2005Been seeking this one for a while. Thanks a lot Captain Cougar! Black as expected with a lighter orange head. Aroma is deep bourbon with some chocolate covered raisins keeping it interesting. Also some vanilla and oaky goodness as you keep getting into the complex and well layered aroma. The taste hits you up front with strong coffee. Also some hints of raspberries and very high percentage cocoa dark chocolate. As it warms and you get toward the end, you get a smooth cocoa character. This is very nice and deserving of the praise. tiggmtl (4312), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 17, 2004 Sweet chocolate aroma with roasty and smokey notes and some hints of orangey, resinous hops. Opaque brown-black with thin but lasting brown-tan head. Flavour has notes of roasted malts and balsamic-like flavours to play along with the huge cocoa and leafy hop flavours. Fair bitterness in the finish. Medium-full body is soft in the mouth though perhaps a bit still. Bottle enjoyed with MartinT and Rastacouere. BBB63 (4283), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 25, 2003 Opaque black with large creamy light brown head. Excellent lacing. Full-bodied. Heavy malty aroma, bittersweet chocolate and expresso nose, hints of smoke and spruce. Chocolate undertones to a bitter taste, finishes clean however. Very creamy and lively mouthfeel. Moderate alcohol level also detected on the palate. Rivals Youngs Double Chocolate stout for best of the genre, outstanding beer, highly recommended. cgarvieuk (4273), Edinburgh, Scotland

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Dec 4, 2003 Bottle. Picked this up in my local supermarket and didn't realise it's been gathering so many high ratings. Gee, I must be so out of step with the rest of you guys because I didn't quite get the reasons for such acclaim. It's a dryish stout with evident alcohol. Very dark with a coffee coloured head that soon settles into a dirty ring with a slight foam in the centre. Alcohol dominated aroma through which plastic and coffee notes waft upwards. The alcohol fumes tip this in the direction of an Imperial Stout but without the complexity or attractiveness. A rather simplistic alcohol fired stout aroma. Not great. A creamy mouthfeel with some barely noticeable fizz. The creaminess fades away wetly. Dry stout flavours and alcohol. Too much alcohol for too little reward. Not impressed. Impressive. A bit sharp chocolate aroma. Amazing that these undoubtedly nice fellows have managed to combine sweet chocolate malt with hops and such a high alcohol percentage. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 23, 2009 Sampled during MN Gathering II and shared by MilkmanDan. From a 12-oz bottle (2003-04 vintage) pours an opaque dark brown brew with a creamy tan head that has some nice retention and spotty lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, floral hops, some toasted dark malt and some tobacco. Taste is medium bodied, very little carbonation with flavors of dark chocolate, some dark pitted fruits, tobacco, and some alcohol presence. Finish remains a light tobacco and dark chocolate aftertaste that slowly disappears. The alcohol warmth has a nice finish.
