4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 pnista (1007) - Bloomington, USA - MAR 21, 2006
UPDATED: AUG 15, 2006 Winter 05-06 bottling. As dark as anything I’ve ever poured before with a browner than tan head (with some staying power). The stream from the bottle looked more like oil than beer. The aroma is heady with alcohol, some fruity esters, and chocolate malt with roastiness. The palate is luxurious and ample, smooth cream with tiny little bubbles. The flavor is a little raw, but still really a joy to drink, which seems unusual. I’m assaulted by alcohol, but not in an unpleasant way (more like a port than a scotch). Beneath that there’s some cherry, big roast and big chocolate malt. No creaminess here! A charcoal bitterness lingers on the tongue in a very good way. I will be laying down the rest of this six pack for sure!

Appearance is unchanged, and though this was an early rating, I’m not altering the points. Those nose has sweeter more prune-like character to it than I last remember, with very prominent fruit. The palate is really still top notch. And the flavor has some roughness around the edges still, but it is much sweeter. I think I’m going to sit on the 4 bottles left for some time. And though I should probably alter this early rating, I’m going to wait for the next tasting to do so.

Pours a deep dark slightly viscous black with a small brown head. Aroma is a strong chocolate with some roasted dark malts and espresso. Taste is chocolatey, with some roasted dark malt, espresso, and some hops and dark cacao bitterness. A rich full bodied and slightly viscous mouth feel with moderate carbonation on the palate. Finished with a bitter sweet choclatey and roasted dark malts, some espresso, ending is a long sweet lingering bitter chocolate flavor. Overall a delicious, flavorful, satisfying and nicely balance brew. A very enjoyable drink.

Bottle. Thick black pour with a creamy tan head that lasts a while. Aroma is very roasty with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, almonds, raisins, cherries and caramel. Flavour mirrors the aroma. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with soft carbonation and a lingering roasty, bitter chocolatey finish. This is a superb stout; as thick as they come, it has the texture of a liquid dessert. Simply delicious.
