COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specialty roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

Winter 02-03 Bottling Large, dense and creamy mocha colored head that lasted a good while; very good lacing. Strong, enticing dark chocolate aroma layered with a slightly smoky roastiness, some fruitiness and bit of a red wine-like acidity. Flavor upfront was moderately sweet and malty accompanied by a very present semi-sweet dark chocolate character. Mid-palate had some fruitiness with a slight acidity and a pleasingly subtle alcohol warmth that lasted into the finish. Wonderfully long lasting finish and aftertaste that was absent the usual sharpness of black malt/roasted barley. Instead it was reminiscent of toasted pastry crust, coffee, and burnt currant; all set off nicely by a mild bitterness. Palate was full bodied with a silky-velvety texture that was enhanced by a soft carbonation. Very smooth and quite easy drinking for and imperial stout. The complex finish is what really captivated me about this beer. This would go well with a nice Sachertorte or a dark chocolate-raspberry mousse cake. Thanks to DocLock for sending me TWO of these!

I’m glad Catherine the Great loved to get loaded. Pours a jet black, with medium tan crema head. Aroma was of alcohol, coconut, dark chocolate, and vinous qualities. Tasted of dark chocolate, vinous, roasted malts, and espresso. Had a heavy slick body with low carbonation. Had a strong grape and coffee aftertaste.

0.355l bottle. Pitch black body, thin light brown head. Aroma of mostly caramel and chocolate with some dried fruits and coffee. Taste of chocolate, caramel, reisins, roasted malts and some whiskey. The name reflects the character. It’s really chocolatey. I like this a lot.

Very solid offering, this pours black with a thin, but persistent and clingy top of brown head. Aroma is not overwhelmingly chocolate, but it’s there among vanilla, roast, and slight booze. Flavor follows the nose well, and that’s a good thing. Nice notes of dark cocoa, some sweetness in the middle, and a somewhat dry, slightly bitter finish. Will definitely have this again.

Thanks Lore for the bottle!!! Black thick pour with beautiful light brown head. Chcolate milk, spice and dark roasted stout aroma. At first very chocolatey then lots of bitterness like dark chocolate, roasted malts, and slight booziness. Great chocolate stout with a boldness that satisifies. More chocolate than Samuel Smith’s version (and more juiced) but similar combo of bold malty stout and medicinal spice in the finish.

Bottle 355 ml. Deep dark brown, rich lightly tanned head. Aroma reminding of chocolate and some soy sauce (perhaps also some gravy). Taste is very sweet and too boozy for me. Finish has a lot of coffee notes and roasted malts. Palate is somewhat sticky.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Thick treacly brown black pour, brownish foam which vanished rapidly. Decent stuff, the usual heavy roast with some warming booze and chocolate and coffee flavours. Less hoppy and bitter than some, malts to the fore. A decent imperial stout.
