4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Dickinsonbeer (5076) - Hoboken, USA - AUG 25, 2002
(vintage: 2000-2001- bottle conditioned)I figured the for rating #100 it better be a special brew- and this is a very special beer. A few years ago my dad won a 5 gallon sleeve of Brooklyn’s black chocolate stout. I was only 17 at the time and inexperienced with alcohol. Nevertheless I drank 5 pints of it and proceeded later that night to puke all over the bathroom, outside, etc. It was not a good night. 3 years later and I was ready to try it again. This time I only bought 1 bottle, for fear of what could happen if you have too many. This beer is so complex it is hard to describe all the flavors that are in it. First off, the color is pitch black with no light penetrating even the edge of the glass. Head starts off tan-light brown, and small, and lingers for a while before disappearing after a few sips. If you wait a while after taking a sip, the alcohol appears in the back of the throat, almost warming the entire body. Feels like more than 8.5%alc. Aroma is of strong port with very subtle hints of alcohol. Malt, sugar and malasses smell very similar to a strong barleywine. However, there are some aroma hops that peak through the sugars. As it warms, aroma turns to a red wine and plum with other fruity notes. Full body, which is loaded with complex flavors like grapes, plum, raisin, brown sugar. Flavor fills the mouth then leaves the back of the tongue with lots of hop bitterness. Alcohol present in flavor moreso than other imperials like storm king, but it doesnt take away from the beer. In fact it accentuates the strong maltiness. Lots of roasted malts- roastedd barley in particular- also some chocolate malts, however, not much actual true chocolate flavors typically found in milk and sweet stouts. Overall one of the best imperials- and can hold its own against storm king.

Pours a deep dark slightly viscous black with a small brown head. Aroma is a strong chocolate with some roasted dark malts and espresso. Taste is chocolatey, with some roasted dark malt, espresso, and some hops and dark cacao bitterness. A rich full bodied and slightly viscous mouth feel with moderate carbonation on the palate. Finished with a bitter sweet choclatey and roasted dark malts, some espresso, ending is a long sweet lingering bitter chocolate flavor. Overall a delicious, flavorful, satisfying and nicely balance brew. A very enjoyable drink.

Bottle. Thick black pour with a creamy tan head that lasts a while. Aroma is very roasty with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, almonds, raisins, cherries and caramel. Flavour mirrors the aroma. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with soft carbonation and a lingering roasty, bitter chocolatey finish. This is a superb stout; as thick as they come, it has the texture of a liquid dessert. Simply delicious.
