detroitsteel (208), England Jun 23, 2007 Bottle. Pours like expresso coffee - dark, black and thick. Almost black brown in the glass, with a small, fine brown head. Smells of malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Taste is of burnt caramel, orange peel and dark, bitter chocolate giving way to roasted coffee beans and a long dark bitter alcohol and expresso finish. Good god almighty - this is a beer; strong and smooth at once, bags of flavours that take your mouth over. And what a bold finish - lingers in your mouth for ever! highly recomended.
cazort (301), New Haven, Connecticut, USA May 9, 2008 (On tap) Rich, hearty, aromatic. Hardly bitter at all. Only a mild roast is present. A bit more like wine than beer, except with a rich caramel quality. While I would appreciate more bitterness, and while the alcohol is not well masked, I think that overall, this is a pretty good beer. I do not, however, think that it warrants the high ratings that it has been given. I notice a tendency of reviewers to give higher ratings to beers with high alcohol contents regardless of taste. I simply don’t think this beer has the flavour to back up its strength in abv. It is rich, but it hardly has any bitterness, and in my opinion, this leaves it lacking. I simply cannot taste any hops at all, and I barely taste the roast. And it does come across as too heavy. Burrobuns (69), Columbia, Missouri, USA May 7, 2008 Strong chocolate and coffee flavors with alcohol taste in the background. Dark brown with a nice tan head that fades after a bit. My biggest complaint is that it is seasonal and I am drinking my last one. I wish I had more self control. Todeon (44), Höllviken, Sweden May 7, 2008 Bottle. The best beer from the Brooklyn Brewery. Aroma is totally domiinated by chocolate and coffe. Mouthfeel is a bit wild. Taste is sweet and warm with bananas, chocolate and coffe with a warm and sweet finish. bhensonb (2309), Woodland, California, USA May 5, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Very dark toasted malt aroma with coffee and/or chocolate. Black color with a respectable tan head. Thin to medium body with coarsely creamy carbonation. Flavor is burnt malt, but sweet, with a light creosote note. Milk chocolate hides behind the burnt malt. The finish is smooth, fairly dry, with a creamy burnt flavor. In the end it’s burnt and lightly bitter. Never had an IS like this. Sweet chocolate comes forth more noticeably as time passes. The alcohol is totally hidden. Puts the craft in craft ale. Rogueone (111), I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA May 5, 2008 This is a pretty solid beer that really does age well. 12 oz. bottle: Pours a oil dark black, very thin dark tan ring around the edges. Aroma and flavor of roasted chocolate malt, smooth vanilla undertones and a powerful alcoholic bite. Nom nom nom.
