Shared by jimmack? Definately an improvement over the regular version but was quite thin which proved to be a little of a turn off. Other than that not a bad beer at all.

750 ml bottle provided by jimmack at the Captain Lawrence batch 2 Cuvee de Castleton release, thanks Jim. Pours jet black and slick as oil with a small lacing of creamy beige head. Aroma of dark roasted malts, light bitter chocolate and oily butter. It’s almost like some one melted some chocolate and combined it with roasted malts. Smooth body but thinner then Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout but still rich and full. Flavor isn’t as chocolatey as other impy stous but loaded with lots of burnt and roasty malts. Great beer that I wish was available to purchase.

Courtesy of a mysterious man, knowledge of him I shall disavow if questioned. The aroma was dark roasted malt, tart, twang and cooked dark fruits along with a bit of powdered aspirin. I didn’t find it particularly appealing and I didn’t notice much int he way of barrel-aging notes either in the form of wood or Woodford Reserve. The body was a full on black and held a thumb thick tan head. The first sip is very vinous with lots of dark fruit, toasted and roasted malt notes, mild chocolate and more of that tart, tangy, almost wild finish. Kind of had a Belgian Stout feel to it and that isn’t an approach I much care for.

750mL bottle, courtesy of Dickinsonbeer. Thanks, Paul! Pours an oily, chocolate-brown color; medium brown head with minimal retention and patchy lacing. Solid amounts of bitter chocolate and astringent, mineral hop bitterness; slightly rough, bitter chocolate edges. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy, toasty bitter chocolate upfront, with slightly over-the-top mineral-based astringent bitterness; very rough around the edges; toasty bourbon character, but messy and very astringent / burnt overall. Lengthy finish: bready, burnt malts, and plenty of chocolate.

750ml. bottle. Nearly black in color with a medium sized tan head. Lots of vanilla in the nose, along with some oak, mild bourbon and dark chocolate. The flavor was dark roasted malts, dark chocolate and again just a little bourbon. The bourbon complimented the flavor of the beer, not like some bourbon barrel beers which overpower the beer itself. The body was surprisingly thin, but was actually welcomed since it was sampled outside on a 95 degree day. However I would normally prefer an impy stout to be more full bodied. Very enjoyable.

Thin black pour with chocolatey head. Very strong on licorice and dark roasted malts. Flavor is much the same with a bit of chocolate and coffee bitterness. Body is very dissapointing and thin. A dissapointment for what could have been so amazing.

sampled @ Great Orlando Beer Festival. Strong dark aromas, very roasty, burnt chocolate. Pours black with dark brown lacing and dense dark brown head. Dark flavors, dark malts, burnt coffee, rich dark chocolate, smooth licoricce flavors, with a very smooth vanilla. Very nice and a treat to try it!

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2009 [Batch #1] Sampled 4.5.08 thanks to the great people at WLV Liquors in Chicago. Pours thin black with a brown head. Strong licorice aroma. Dark roasted malts, chocolate and lots of licorice. Somewhat woody. Thin body, fluffy. I wish I took better notes... however one thing is for sure, it was somewhat disappointing.

[Batch #2] Sampled with funkybrewster. Continuing my adventures with corks... this one didn’t fly off immediately but did hit the ceiling a few seconds after the cage came off. Glad I get a second chance to rate this one on a clean palate rather than the whirlwind Belgian tasting previously. Pours a perfect dark near black with a perfect tall mocha/gray colored thick dense foamy froth that subsides leaving generous lacing. Great aroma, lightly fruity, decedent, vanilla bourbon, dark roast with some acidity but not burnt, some boozy raisin.
Rich flavor, some acidity and fruitiness from the roast and bourbon, a bit floral, the roast is really kept in check for the bourbon, finally a barrel aged stout that really feels like its barrel aged, lots of bourbon in almost perfect match to the roast, definitely boozy in the mouthfeel but not as much in the flavor, slightly spicy woody notes, smooth old dark chocolate, could use more dark chocolate, just enough vanilla, light licorice, not terrible sweet either, dry for an IRS. I really like this actually, much better than before. Fantastic long dark chocolate bourbon aftertaste. Just a bit ashy. Body is medium/full with a great mouthful for a different kind of IRS, not huge and syrupy sticky sweet, uniform fine but soft carbonation, the slightly thin watery feel really plays nice with the bourbon.
A dark chocolate bourbon cordial.
Actually starting to taste a bit like gasoline as it warms...

Bottle given to me as gift from work. Sampled at "An evening with Pantanap #3. Beautiful opaque black with medium dark brown tan head. Belgian strong aroma with alc, roast, chocolate, yeast, very complex. Dark roast, yeasty flavor with bourbon. Thin body with poor carbonation. Very nice but doesn’t go the distance.
