Barrel-aged in Woodford Reserve bottles. Brooklyn Black Ops does not exist. However, if it did exist, it would be a robust stout concocted by the Brooklyn brewing team under cover of secrecy and hidden from everyone else at the brewery. Supposedly, "Black Ops" was aged for four months in bourbon barrels, bottled flat, and re-fermented with Champagne yeast, creating big chocolate and coffee flavors with a rich underpinning of vanilla-like oak notes. They say it’s vanishingly rare. We have no idea what they’re talking about.

Was it bad, absolutely not. Is it as good as other comparable big bourbon barrel aged stouts? NO. I was disappointed with this one. It fell short in all categories. It wasn’t offensive in any way, just lacking.

Dark, almost pitch black. Smells of anise, chocolate, oak, light on the bourbon, a little roasty. Taste is a sweet chocolate, roasted hop, vanilla, ash. As it warms can taste the wood ford reserve bourbon better. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a jet black with a thin tan head. Aroma is mostly bourbon, some vanilla, some roast. Flavor is again dominated by bourbon, with some roast, vanilla, and sweet chocolate. Smooth, but not too heavy. A bit one-dimensional for an imperial stout (and a pricy one at that), but that one dimension is nonetheless very tasty.

2013, lotto 3198.

Bottle. Pitch black body with a frothy tan/brown head, Big aroma (as expected) of bourbon, chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, oak, coffee. A hint of soy sauce. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Full body, velvety/oily texture, soft carbonation. Lots of bourbon and oak in the taste tempered by bitter roast, coffee, chocolate. Lighter taste of dark fruits, licorice. Peppery alcohol at the end. Thanks Jennifer.

Bottle. Bourbon, chocolate malt and grass aroma. Dark black-brown with small head. Extremely strong bourbon flavor dominates - light coffee, chocolate malt, and hay flavors. Light body. Tastes more like bourbon and water - beer takes a back seat in this one.
