COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-aged in Woodford Reserve bottles. Brooklyn Black Ops does not exist. However, if it did exist, it would be a robust stout concocted by the Brooklyn brewing team under cover of secrecy and hidden from everyone else at the brewery. Supposedly, "Black Ops" was aged for four months in bourbon barrels, bottled flat, and re-fermented with Champagne yeast, creating big chocolate and coffee flavors with a rich underpinning of vanilla-like oak notes. They say it’s vanishingly rare. We have no idea what they’re talking about.

Was it bad, absolutely not. Is it as good as other comparable big bourbon barrel aged stouts? NO. I was disappointed with this one. It fell short in all categories. It wasn’t offensive in any way, just lacking.

2014 bottle shared. Motor oil black pour, thin tan head. Big dark chocolate heavy roast nose, good oak, light vanilla. Taster is big dark roast, dark choc, dark coffee, and well integrated barrel notes. Good fruitiness, no vanilla overload. Well balanced, no booze sting. Medium/full body. Barrel and roasty chocolate linger. Expensive, but good.

750 mL bottle. Pours a stouty blackish brown, massive coffee colored head with excellent retention. Nose is heavy barrel, dark roast, cocoa, licorice, coffee, woody. Mouth is medium bodied -- thinner than I’d expect in a stout to be sure -- relatively dry as well (I’m guessing the champagne yeast has a lot to do with that), a whole of the barrel kind of drowns out much everything else. A bit of soot detectable near the dry finish, along with some bitterness. Decent, but not my favorite BA stout by a long shot. Anyway, popped this open to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Who would’ve been 86 today. A true ’drum major for peace’.

Wow. Whiskey and smoke kind of takes beer over. Delightful, yet scary, and oh so enjoyable. But. It doesn’t exist. So shh.

Poured from a 22oz bottle from a trade. Not sure what year it is. 2612A i believe is the batch on the back. Black pour with tan head. Aroma is vanilla, whiskey, oak, and somewhat sweet. Big flavor. Whiskey pretty dominant, but smooth with vanilla, chocolate, and cocoa. Really good.

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. It poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma was of roasted malts with some bread, coffee and chocolate. The taste was similar to the aroma with more bread.

750 ml bottle of 2013 vintage. Black with glints of warm brown at the very edges, a few mm of fine espresso-colored head that lingers nicely. Aroma is butterscotch, vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, bit of maple, bourbon, leather, bit of cocoa powder. Body is only of moderate heaviness, oily, slightly gritty, medium-light fine carbonation with moderate arcing burn. Flavor is more of an untoasted, dry American Oak wood, Rye and pumpernickel breads, light notes of bourbon, rather dry for the style but still some light brown sugar, as from a semi-sweet scone, but not a caramel bomb. Dark fruity cacao, not too boozy. Light herb and sap hop flavor, bitterness that blends in. Overall, a very nice dry example of a bourbon-barrel imperial stout. Aroma and flavor components tend to be more bready here. Bourbon and vanilla isn’t over-the-top, nor is it subtle. Body is surprisingly and perhaps disappointingly light.

Bottle from a trade. Many thanks! Dark brown, black colour, brown foam. Medium carbonation. Aroma of roasted malts, vanilla, bourbon and coffee. Medium sweet, bitter finish. Well balanced. Good stout.

Bottle, 2012. Pours inky black, medium brown head, dissipates fairly slowly, good lacing. Aroma is woody cocoa, bourbon, vanilla. Flavor is very bourbon and oak tannin. Chocolate, vanilla. Medium sweet, light bitter, fairly astringent, hot and rough. Medium light body, lingering heat.
