We brew our beer in New York, about halfway between the hop fields of the Pacific Northwest and the hop fields of Kent, England. So we use earthy English hops to build the foundation and bright citrusy American hops to bring the noise in the rambunctious IPA we call BLAST! British Maris Otter and German Pilsner malts lends solidity, balance and bready flavors to brace up a beer thatís beautifully hoppy, strangely quaffable and oddly compelling. Minerally hop bitterness is followed by a shock wave of flavor and aroma. You wonít even know what hit you.

Malts: Scottish Floor-malted Maris Otter, German Pilsner Malt

Hops: Willamette, Magnum, Cascade, Fuggle, Aurora, Zythos, Bravo, Simcoe, Sorachi Ace, Amarillo, Experiment 6300

Pours clear golden orange with average head and lacing. Aromas of citrus, coriander, orange peel. Remarkably tame for a double IPA, well balanced with generous hops and notes of tangerines and grapefruit. Great beer.

On draft at Bocktown Robinson. Poured hazy orange with just a skim of head present. Flavor starts sweet with grass and light citrus then turns a fairly sharp bitter with a dry finish.

Bottle @ home, via trade. Pours a slightly dark orange appearance with a lasting cream colored head. Slightly metallic and a bit of bubblegum in the nose. Pretty juicy, herbal hoppy nose. Slightly doughy, chewy malty flavor. A bit juicy. Pils grainy / herbal. This bottle seems a bit dated, but the beer seems not too shabby.

Very nicely balanced. Strong hops, hints of citrus zest, smooth with some malt underlying it all. Not too bitter or sharp, and surprisingly drinkable given the alcohol content.

355 ml bottle from the brewery. Pale clear blonde, big frothy off white head, lasting. Looks great. Pine, spruce, resin on the nose. Flavour is sweet malt and an aggressive bitterness. Itís light, fizzy with a bitter sweet finish. Nice.

Best by July 2014.
Appearance: The body is a vibrantly hued orange with perfect clarity. Perched on top is a creamy off-white head that has great retention.
Aroma: The aroma is strong of citrus, but overly harsh in a way. Thereís definitely an astringent quality to this. I also get a sort of marijuana presence.
Taste: The hops are very prominent showing a lot of citrus from bitter orange to candied orange. The malts are slightly prominent, giving a light sweetness to somewhat balance the bitterness. The finish lingers with some hop bitterness and a slight booziness.
Palate: Medium bodied with sharp carbonation.
Overall: I find myself enjoying Blast, but not being impressed with it. Itís a good beer, without a doubt, but it has a very simple hop character that I find is used in so many other beers that itís hard to get excited about nowadays.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/2014. Pours slightly cloudy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of lemon zest, pineapple, tangerine, grapefruit, orange zest, light caramel, light honey, bread, light pine, floral, grass, and floral earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good complexity of bright citrus hops and moderate malt balance; and solid strength. Taste of lemon zest, tangerine, pineapple, grapefruit, orange zest, light caramel, light honey, bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, lemon zest, pineapple, grapefruit, orange zest, floral, grass, light caramel, light honey, bread, light pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of bright citrus/tropical hops with moderate malt sweetness; with nearly balanced malt/hop flavors and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, lightly sticky, and slightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good DIPA style. All around good complexity and balance of bright citrus/tropical hop and pale malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Clear light orange color. Very yellow in the narrower parts of the glass. White head, lasting. Slightly vegetal, herbal aroma. Not bad vegetal (DMS) but just not typical fruity hoppy notes. Sweet candy malt and orange/tangerine fruity flavors. Balance is good. Bitterness is light but there. Sweet without being over the top. The mossiness of the UK hops plays nicely and makes a unique beer. I like the bright fruity sweet malt and how it holds everything together. I can see how sme might not like that this doesnít holdup to straight American style DIPAs, but itís donít its own thIng and is enjoyable in its own right.

From a bottle. Poured a clear golden color with a white head that had great retention, some lace. Aroma certainly had pilsner malts to it. Some citrus hops and a almost minty note. The pilsner malts were certainly more delicate than usual caramel malts. It was still sweet, but had more of a lightly toasted bread flavor to it. Hops were all citrus. Not a big fan of citrus hops, but luckily it was not aggressively hopped. Somewhat dry in the finish. Very easy to drink and alcohol seemed well hidden.

I looked at the overall RB scores before picking up a 4-pack of this, but unfortunately I cannot agree with them after tasting it. The flavors were way too sweet. I felt like I was drinking a glass of sweet red wine. The hops lent a sour taste to the beer as well. I also tasted a bit too much alcohol flavor in the finish and aftertaste.
