Tap at Waterfront Ale House, Manhattan. hazy pale amber beer with a thick white head. Great big hoppy aroma orange, mango, very fresh and citrusy smelling. Flavour is also fruity, orange, apricot and a bit of bubble gum as well. A bit of earthiness, but has very low cohumolones. Sweet and smooth and very tasty. Light prickly alcohol in the finish. A lovely DIPA.

Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - GBBF 2008. A dark gold to copper coloured beer. A lovely piney, hoppy aroma, which hits you from afar. The beer is very bitter with more great piney hops and a top blast of alcohol. Very full flavoured and tasty.

On tap at the brewery. Pours with a clear golden to lightly orange hued body with a thick and lasting, fluffy white head. A darker hue than "The Companion" (a barley wine), which isn’t a good sign for me. Great lace though. Aromas are hoppy, spicy, pine, pineapple. Citrusy hops, canned pineapple, a touch catty. Caramel and alcohol. Flavors are sweet, bready, malty with what seems like a very mild butterscotchy/diacetyl character. Hop notes are herbal, grassy, and dank with medium fruit (mostly mango). Balanced overall. Alcohol is better hidden than on the nose. Lively bubbles with a medium body. Warming.

Draft pint at Bierra Paradiso. Gold clear body, white head. Sweet pineapple and pear scented hop aroma, aggressive bitterness with some cane sugar, starch, and a light presence of Belgian yeast. Not exactly sure what to think of this, it sits somewhere between American Double IPA and a Belgian golden strong ale, with a bit of juniper berries and sugary fruit cocktail thrown in the mix.

Any first impressions?
-A lofty head stays forever atop the hazy blond shine.
-A talkative grapefruity, herbal hop perfume announces an elegant hop celebration.
-Juicy citrus fruit and wooden firmness seep through the biscuity maltiness.
-Comfortable, cushiony maltiness remains drinkable throughout.

What if you dig deeper?
-Hop bitterness is not portentous at all, quite easy-going as a matter of fact, which is surprising considering its festive name.
-Simple cereal sweetness ably supports the intricate hoppiness, creating balance.
-This is an intelligent, flavorful strong ale, which tastes like a balanced, relaxed double IPA.

On cask at The Brazen Head, Brooklyn.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2010 5th August 2008. On tap at GBBF. A touch of barleywine about this DIPA. Smooth not too bitter. Low carbonation. 8th May 2010. Copenhagen Beer Festival. Pale gold beer. Light crisp palate. Piney hops but not aggressive. Aromatic. Pretty spot on.
