COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Brown Ale, made exclusively with American ingredients, won Bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival in the Strong Ale Category in 1991 and in the American Brown Ale Category in 1992. Brooklyn Brown uses pale, crystal, chocolate, and black malts to attain a complex creamy texture. It is more heavily hopped than its British forbears.

This beer’s got a nice clear brown body, with a ruby-red glow to it. Light brown foamy head. Some lacing, some carbonation, and a pretty decent head retention. This sure looks like a proper Brown Ale. The aroma is very malty, with notes of roastiness, bitter chocolate, and brown sugar. However there is also a decent hop smell, with a floral and grassy feel to it. Hints of dark fruits... The taste starts out quite roasty and chocolatey, with some bitterness from the roasted malts. Then a decent hop flavour comes through, lingering all the way to the end. Fairly sweet, a little sour, with hints of prunes or raisins. Tastes like a good Brown ale, but I’ve had better AMERICAN brown ales. Light-to-medium body to it. A little disappointing, because it feels a bit thin. Some crisp carbonation at first. Good drinkability’ this could easily make a session brown ale. Goes down smoothly, since neither the flavour nor the body is too strong.

Shared bottle at Cardinal 29.9.2010. Clear amber with a light brown creamy head. Roasted malts, dried fruits, caramel and hops on the nose. Sweet and acidic flavors with a short roasted finish. Light to medium body. Dry mouth.

Flavorful (darker malts, including a touch of chocolate), but also dry. More heavily hopped than its British forbears, perhaps, but the hops are mainly to cut any sweetness and to add a touch of floral flavor. It doesn’t come across as thin or weak. This once won a medal in the GABF Strong Ale category? It’s a sessions beer now, and I don’t mean that as a criticism.

Pours a murky, swamp brown with a tan head that fades down to a rimmer. It has a malty, caramel and grain aroma. It is very smooth in the mouth at the start bringing along a malt, cereal flavor. It has an almost bubblegum middle before the hops and carbonation pierce through and leave a little zip on the tongue. It improves as it warms in the glass.

12 oz bottle. Pours a brown with moderate, quickly diminishing tan head. Sweet caremel/chocolate malt aroma, with hint of licorice? Taste is pretty nice. Initially a bit sour moving to moderate sweetness and then with a light bitterness towards the end. Comes across as reasonably light tasting for a brown ale, but not in bad way. Overall pretty good.

12 oz bottle served in a tulip. Pour is deep cola with three fingers beige head. Nose is roasted malt, light caramel, and rain water. Taste is roasted malts and caramel that ends with a dry toffee finish. This one is kind of week in a few categories, but it’s easy to drink and not bad over all. I could easily enjoy a few growlers.
