durhambeer (1187), Durham, USA May 3, 2008 Draft at Raleigh WBF. Malty hops on the nose, sweet aroma. Same on palate. Thin, though, and too much sweetness. Quite average, but I would happily get one on tap every once in awhile. yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA May 3, 2008 Brooklyn Brown Ale is a dark reddish brown with a frothy light brown head that fades to a blotchy film. The head retention is excellent and it leaves thick sheets of foam on the glass. It has a full, malty, chocolaty, roasty aroma that’s fresh, a touch sweet and a bit spicy. The bouquet is dusty. It has a medium-light body and it’s pretty smooth. The finish is dry and a little gritty. The flavor is mellow, roasty, lightly bitter and a touch sour. It tastes like brown sugar and it’s grainy. It has pretty good balance. Good stuff. mgoy (343), Oak Brook, Illinois, USA Apr 29, 2008 Brooklyn Brown Ale is a deep mahogny color with a small and disappearing khaki head. The aroma is very light and developed by the sweet malts used in brewing. The flavor has some notes of chocolate and hops. This is a little more watery than I like, and leaves a poor aftertaste.
I would have rated this higher is the head were more fully developed. This is a common problem amongst the Brooklys Brewery offerings I have tried.
TeamTrappist (365), jericho, New York, USA Apr 26, 2008 On draft. Brown like the label says, with a 2 inch head. Not much of a nose, and pretty similar to the lager, but with actually less overall body. On my second beer, as it warmed a bit, the flavors opened up to exhibit a bit more depth. Pretty simple beer, but not bad. OleR (2008), Oslo, Norway Apr 25, 2008 355 ml bottle. Clear ruby brown. Low tan head. Toasted, toffeeish malt aroma. Peppery, caramellih notes. A scent of sweetend citrus. Taste is inviting sweet and malty with a well balanced hopbitterness. Healthy body. Malty-bitter finish. A reliable Brown Ale. blipp (1631), Newark, New Jersey, USA Apr 25, 2008 Bottle. Pours red/brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet and roasted malt, caramel and chocolate. Medium body. Flavor is lightly roasted malt with a light note of coffee and wood. Not bad. jrehmert (7), Ellicott City, Maryland, USA does not count Apr 24, 2008 Aroma:
Light molasses, brown sugar, grainy, light alcohol, very light/earthy hops - maybe a little centennial/chinook?
Appearance:
Brilliant dark brown, off-white and persistent head of small bubbles and medium lacing
Flavor:
Dark biscuit/melanoidin flavor, light residual brown sugar sweetness, slight carbonic bite, light caramel and roast
Mouthfeel:
Medium to medium-heavy body, but not "chewy"... The caronation helps to lighten the residual sweetness.
Overall: Fantastic brown ale. A great interpretation of the quintissential homebrew style, but not so roasty/coffee like many believe it should resemble... mjs (1446), Helsinki, Finland Apr 24, 2008 (From old notes, draught at Painobaari on 2008-01-22) Quite small head. Very brown in colour. Hops and malts in nose. Hops in taste, too, and after the beer got warmer malts appeared. Rather balanced taste.
