2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 StoutOrDeath (119) - USA - APR 23, 2007
Not too shabby, but I like the Lager better.
This was kind of what I expected it to taste like. That’s about the best description I can give it, and if you’re here, then you know what it tastes like already.

I am going to keep trying this brewery’s line until the chocolate stout is back in season. However, this doesnt help bolster my impression of their line of beers thus far. Rather smooth but a bit too hoppy, this beer has a dry, flavorless aftertaste. Not very roasty or malty, the only distinguishable flavor was faint cocoa. Head died quick, before I was even able to jot down its color. Nothing special here.
2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - JAN 8, 2002
I requested this from Venom. After reading an article and an interview from Garrett Oliver boasting this beers capabilities to stand up to a great cigar, I had to try. I was expecting a rich, chocolatey and hoppy concoction. I was utterly disappointed. Aroma is decent with dominant smells of caramel popcorn and butterscotch. It sounds better than the actual smell itself. The middle of this beer was tasteless which basicaly means there is nothing to counter the bitter finish. The first disappointment from this good brewery.

Pours a transparent ruby mahogany with a very mild off-white head that laces beautifully. Nose is of some malt and maybe some chocolate/coffee--very mild nose, though. Start is pretty carbonated and without too much tase. Can taste a subtle coffee/chocolate malt at the end, but all in all it seems pretty tasteless. For the style, this is not abnormal, but I like my browns to have a little more character.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 Terminus (2617) - Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA - FEB 27, 2006
bottle-deep mahogony look with a light off- white small bubble white head. very low carbonation especially for this style. hops abundent in the nose but with a huge amount of diacytl as well all over the aroma. lots of peanut buttery notes due to the combination of the malts and the diacytl issue. If this beer didn’t have the diacytl, this would be one of the best brown ales out there. I like the fact that this beer is heavily hopped, making unique for such a bland style. Maybe i will have to get another sample sometime.

Bottle from the Offie, Leicester, kindly purchased for me by Lea Parsons and delivered to me at GBBF 05 - big thanks Lea!! Cola coloured, no head. Nutty sweet, coco/cereal aroma (weetos). Acidic, biting in the mouth. No real flavour, just some malty sweetness and aggressive carbonation. Average stuff - a little watery and lacking some oomph.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2004 Bottle. Pours a big head and the head retains pretty well with good thick lacing. Nose is actually pretty hoppy (maybe heavy on the Cascade hops?) with some sweet aroma, but not able to pinpoint what the sweet scent is. No body to this one. Those that call this a creamy texture are crazy. Watery and sort of blah with a sour and tart unpleasantly bitter finish. This is not a very good brown ale. It gets a little better as it warms (or my palate has been numbed). If you drink this one, try it at warmer temps. Completely overrated.

Bottle. Pours a rubied brown with an average-size creamy and frothy light brown head, somewhat lasting, fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, bread, nutty), light hops (grass, herbs), average yeast (earth, dough) with notes of dates and light cocoa. Medium bodied, thin texture, average carbonation and a metallic finish. Moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness; roasted nutty and caramel malt flavor.

Definitely creamy in texture; tastes nice but was replacing a Tilburg’s and was not that pleased with it; definite hoppy taste with a little aftertaste that is OK; not bad.
