UPDATED: OCT 20, 2007 a brown ale for ipa fans. it’s hoppier than your run of the mill brown ale, and really drinkable, especially on tap. its a fairly different animal on tap - i get the feeling its a little maltier when bottled, could be me though. i’ve actually come across this beer in bars more often in D.C. than in new york.

I purchased a keg of this for my kegerator. I just love the flavor. I has been running a bit foamy even with my pressure really low, but the head is nice and the chocolate, and caramel notes are outstanding.

Bottle. pours a deep woody brown with a red tint, nice tan head and good lace. Aroma is at first, strong brewed tea, then caramel. Taste is toffee, nuts, dark chocolate.....malts...roasted.
Very creamy, rich. Hops are presented, yet subdued. Excellent.

sensory first impression: A beautiful, carbonated, deep red ale, with a chocolate nutty aroma, thin tannish head, and dark red and orange highlights. What a beatiful beer. Nice hoppy bite and a malty backbone. Not as heavy as you expect, but not disappointing at all. Lace hangs nicely. A bit thin in weight, but texture and flavor are spot on.

Yeast flavor is: dusty, sharp cheese, crispy, dry.
Other flavors include: alcohol, garlic, ginger, raisin, sulfur, smoke, cherries
Visuals/Appearance:
Color is: deep red, brown, burnt brick, fiery, Darth Maul.
Liquid is: clear, sparkling, attractive.
Head and lace are: frothy, tan, lace hangs on and on.
Taste/Flavor:
Maltiness or Sweetness level is: medium
Hoppiness or Bitterness level is: medium
Sour level is: heavy
Palate/Tactile:
Body or Mouthfeel is: medium to full
Texture is: sticky, salty, sour
Carbonation is: lively
Finish is: medium astringent, middling
Overall experience: A very nice change of pace - I’d have this again, though it is not at the level of a fruity hefeweizen or a chocolate stout, it is a delicious and flavor driven ale.

I love American Brown Ales and this is one of the best: Nice mouthfeel and a great combination of crystal malt and aroma hops
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jrehmert (7) - Ellicott City, Maryland, USA - APR 24, 2008 does not count
Aroma:
Light molasses, brown sugar, grainy, light alcohol, very light/earthy hops - maybe a little centennial/chinook?
Appearance:
Brilliant dark brown, off-white and persistent head of small bubbles and medium lacing
Flavor:
Dark biscuit/melanoidin flavor, light residual brown sugar sweetness, slight carbonic bite, light caramel and roast
Mouthfeel:
Medium to medium-heavy body, but not "chewy"... The caronation helps to lighten the residual sweetness.
Overall: Fantastic brown ale. A great interpretation of the quintissential homebrew style, but not so roasty/coffee like many believe it should resemble...
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 rampmaster (642) - Alden, New York, USA - JUL 20, 2009
Presentation: It was poured from brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. On the label there is a best before date.
Appearance: The body has a dark mahogany color with a light tan head on top. The head quickly fades down to just a ring on bubbles around the edge of the glass. The lacing is mostly slick and slides down the glass with just a little bit sticking to the glass.
Smell: The aroma sweet with hints of roasted and toasted malt.
Taste/Mouth Feel: Up front the flavor has a nice sweet bready malt with hints of roasted barley, caramel and toffee. The hop flavor is mellow but adds very good balance to the finish. It has a big round and smooth texture with soft carbonation and a solid medium to full body.
Notes: Over all this is one very tasty brown Ale.
