In comparison to most brown ales out nowadays, this one is very traditional. Ringwood yeast.. it has to be. The smell is minerally and slight hoppy, with chocolate and coffee undertones. The taste is sulfuric and minerally, not in a bad way though. Very traditional throughout. Rich, bold, and strong tasting, but quaffable as a mother. Chocolate and coffee flavors abound, but are balanced by a long, drawn out bitterness. Very good example of the style.

Jan 6, 2009 pours a brown red colour .. fabulous lacing .. nice level of roast .. decent mouthfeel .. not awfully complex but a solid offering, good for a session but i need more personally...

Jan 5, 2009 330 mL. Pours a clear reddish brown with a small head that settles to a thin film. Mid to low carbonation. Not much lacing. Aroma of malt and burnt sugar. Taste is quite impressive. Start bubbly with some hazelnut and caramel but ends with some spicy hops. Watery mouthfeel. Long, watery finish.

Jan 2, 2009 Light black (!) body with thick brown two-finger head that softens nicely into the glass... malty presence undeniable... sugars tantalize while the hops balance nicely at the nose... smooth, almost perfectly "brown" in its presence, with the liquidity of a stout and the hop body of a pale ale--easily drinkable... sugary impressions early, with some chocolate, smoky something (?) and toffee to sweeten the deal... satisfying--especially on a snowday nightcap--with the smoothness of a Newcastle and a flavor that sets BBA a step above Sam Adams et al....
