Growler from Big Z - this would probably be better classified as a belgian strong ale than a mead - hazy light gold - some honey sweetness in the nose, but there is also a subtle but complex mixture of hay, pepper, thyme, lavender, some earthy/barnyardy smells - lightly sweet in the flavor, but it is mostly tangy, moving to dry and spicy in the finish - quite a bit of herbal, peppery character - wildflower notes - some wheat and other mild grain qualities - dry finish of grass and herbs - very understated, but very well done.

Aroma is spicy, peppery, honey. Smell of belgian style yeast. Hazy light yellow color, white head. The flavor is spicy, pepper, honey, flowers, again the familiar belgian yeast. The finish is spicy, resiny hops, lingering bitterness, clean. . The body is medium. Not bad.

Draft. Pours light yellow with a thin white head. Sweet honey like aroma with some light phenolic and spicy notes. The flavor is similar, honey like sweetness, some light grains, and a some spices, almost licorice-ish. Pretty good.

joebudzjoe (490) - Connecticut, USA - JUN 2, 2010
Draft @ the Brooklyn Brewery. Pale burnt yellow color with no head. Initial hints of poppy, grapes, apples and honey. This beer has a nice dry finish that carries well after the last sip.

Draft. Poured cloudy orange color with moderate creamy white head with good lacing. Heavy to heavy citrus honey, banana and spice aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium citrus honey and spice sweet flavor with a rich sweet finish of moderate duration. Pleasing brew that I would recommend to a freind.

Just added this one, and I’ll be the first to rate it too.

Location: On tap at the Brass Rail, 6/1/10

Aroma: Nose is lots of belgian yeast, plus a good amount of honey, and some spice.
Appearance: The look is mostly clear golden color, small white head, light lace.
Flavor: Taste is surprisingly only mild-medium sweet, and mildly bitter too.
Palate: The palate is heavy on the carbonation, light-med bodied, and crisp.
Overall Impression: Not really a mead, its a braggot...but I got no clue where to stick that...Anyway, it is a very solid summer beer, and I learned something new: "People often brought ale and mead together in a popular drink called ’braggott’. Sometimes these braggotts were simply blends, but the best of them had the grain and honey extracts fermented together, bringing both sets of flavors into a unified whole."
So there is that..
