COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Last winter, while the Brooklyn brewing team sat around a peat fire drinking some inspirational drinks, brewer Tom Price mentioned that his friend’s bakery made some very fine oatmeal cookies. Before long, we were all talking about oatmeal cookies and how good they are with beer. Pretty soon we’d somehow decided that the cookies should actually become a beer. Funny, the things people come up with while drinking in front of a good fire. Of course, oatmeal in beer isn’t a new idea. For centuries brewers have added oats to the mash, giving the resulting beers – usually stouts – silky smooth textures. But how best to create the flavors we had in mind? Out in Jersey City (NYC’s 6th borough), Tom’s friends at Feed Your Soul Bakery make some of the tastiest oatmeal cookies we’ve ever had. After talking to the bakers (and eating a lot of cookies), we brewed a beer from floor-malted barley malt, golden oats, raisins, brown sugar, honey, vanilla beans and a subtle dash of spice. Brooklyn Cookie Jar Porter brings all these flavors together with light chocolate, coffee and caramel flavors to create a beer that will warm up the coldest nights, even if you don’t have a peat fire. It’s very nice by itself, but perhaps even better with roasted pork, barbecue, or traditional Mexican mole dishes. Or, of course, some oatmeal cookies and ice cream.

On tap at Track 84 - Warwick, RI. Aroma throws a sweet and somewhat pleasent toffee pudding and brown bread with a bristly crispy butter and sugar caramelization. Pours a heavy brown with little white head. Flavor is immediately sweet and surprisingly boozy for only ~7%. The alcohols are warm, but pair well with the spicing underneath. The oatmeal creaminess adds a lot of depth to this beer. There were a lot of ways to go with this beer, but I think this worked the best.

Tap at Max’s. Pours a mostly deep dark brown- coffee almost black with a decent lasting off beige head. Aroma is nutty, chocolate malts, mostly sweet, definite oatmeal and oatmeal cookie going on- sweet moderate fruits- raisin, toast, and caramel/toffee sweet. Flavor is nicely sweet with toffee and smooth with creamy oats, cookie-like with chocolate malts, toast, Munich sweetness, light butter- diacetyl slickness but overall I thought it was pretty good.

On tap @ Sergio’s. Toasty, roasty, malty sweet aroma. Low carbonation, opaque dark brown with a low tan head. Oatmeal slickness/fullness on the palette, medium roast and bready flavors. Rich full mouthfeel. Would like to taste it again with more carbonation; but very good.

Picked up 1/30/10 as growler-fill from Bellport Dave’s. Drinking it tonight, 2/2/2010. Pours like a porter. Very dark, almost black. Minimal head (probably from two days post fill?) "Bubblegum" up front then some cocoa and chocolately-stuff as it warms. Not a bad aroma but not really all that intriguing either. Then again, as a porter, it’s probably not supposed to weigh in on the nose like a RIS. Pretty thin. Residual cocoa finish. Can’t shake the "candy flavor". "Dusty" finish.

Tap at Rattle n Hum: Deep slick headless brown pour. Chocolaty and raisiny aroma with a soft roast presence. Slick body with mild carbonation. Airy/wafery dark malts in the flavor. Some raisiny character, but it’s quite dry. A hint of metallic character with a softly roasted finish. One dimensional and par at best. The story is romantic, but the beer in practice is a mere mediocrity.

Tap at Max’s in Baltimore, courtesy of Rob - than you sir! Thin maroon color with an edge head and no lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate and vanilla. Flavor starts with caramel, progresses to malt balls and cocoa with a scotch finish. Interesting.

Pours dark w/minor head. Aroma is vanilly. Taste is the same, I kind of convinced myself it was cookie doughed up. Alcohol camouflaged but can bomb you quickly.

Alcohol is well hidden and the flavor is up front. Might be a little thin for the style, and there’s a touch of raisin more than oat......black as coal with a tan head. The Brewer’s Reserve series continues to impress. Great beer from a great brewery. I like this as much as Backbreaker, in a totally different way.
