Once a "Ghost Bottle" that we only made for ourselves, Brooklyn Cuvée Noire finally journeys beyond our walls. A stout-like blend of German and British pale and dark malts, this beer fermented with Belgian yeast and then spends more than six months in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Dry, brisk, and complex, showing notes of chocolate, coffee, citrus, vanilla and coconut, Cuvée Noire is refermented in this bottle of Champagne yeast. It is a most excellent accompaniment means to dinner.

Draft. Poured dark brown color with an average fizzy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted yeast and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where exceeded.

750ml bottle, from Dutch’s. Blend #4. BQE Q2 2014, it says. Split with robotopera and friends. Black color. Half-finger of khaki head. Leaves good thicker lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of creamy texture. Lighter cabronation, lightly soft. Kind of dry finish. Great dark chocolate, some coffee, definite whiskey, but it’s all flavor... Impressively little burn or bite to it. Little alcohol warmth. Moderate sweet taste, light spiciness to it, nice moderate bitter taste. Some nice coffee, mild roast in the finish. Gets a lot better as it sits and warms up. At first it’s kind of rough and soft, with that champagne yeast, but as it mellows it becomes velvety and creamy. The bitter orange peel is obvious when its first opened, but it gets much better integrated as this goes. Like any true belgian style, this beer was way better after it had a chance to "breathe" a bit.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, Blend #4. Served in a Great Lakes chalice, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that stuck around a while. There’s a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like bourbon, oranges, orange peel, dark fruit (plums, raisins), chocolate, blackberries, vanilla and a sweet sugary flavor that reminds me of brown sugar. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s the addition of some coffee, wood, peppery spice and coconut. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit coating and creamy with a good amount of carbonation. Pretty easy to drink for being 10.6% ABV, the alcohol is well hidden. I liked this brew a lot, I’m glad I got to try this one. $18.99 a bottle.

8/24/2014. 750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Dark brown, almost black with a fizzy tan head. Dark fruit, chocolate, bourbon and vanilla aromas. Bourbon flavors with caramel, chocolate and hints of coffee. Boozy finish with sweet bourbon notes.

Aug Ale Alpharetta. Whoa bourbon. I love me some bourbon, but the notes here were like trumpets blasts to the dome. Dark fruit, chocolate with a lively palate, and lightly tart. Interesting for sure.

Pours an opaque sable with a decent light tan head. Smoky malt aroma has orange and earthy notes plus a strong bourbon-soaked wood underpinning. Flavor features roast malt and bourbon-infused wood as the headliners with orange and licorice notes as co-stars. Texture is firm and quite fizzy. Worth $22 a bottle? Hell yes! Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Black pour with a medium, foamy tan head. Lots of bourbon notes, vanilla, roasted malt and toasted coconut in the nose. Taste is big bourbon, vanilla, roasted malt, fruit notes, toasted coconut and woody notes. Body is medium with a soft bubbly carbonation and LOTS of boozy warmth. Ends with more chocolate, bourbon notes, roasted malt, fruit, vanilla and toasted coconut.

Bottle, caged and corked. Black, of course. The head is interesting ... thin-walled foam bubbles pile at first, then settle into an interesting ring of intensely active but thin outer foam. The aroma is wild in nature, like a farmhouse brewery. This drinks with a LOT of things going on in the palate ... a hint of bourbon riding that funky farmhouse, with a bit of thin chocolate. The orange is just a faint kiss, one that I don’t know I’d detect without being given the hint. (#5619, 8/12/2014)
