Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

This is not your typical "slapped in the face by megahops" IPA. This beer is complex and very drinkable. It’s not the hoppiest IPA out there, but it is one the best crafted and most drinkable I’ve had in quite some time.

Wow, what a great IPA. Not at all like other IPA is that malt characteristics are far more complex and rich. Notes of nutmeg in the nose and palate. Very impressed.

Bottle. Light roasted note for the malt, moderate amount of pine for the hops, sweat for the yeast, with hints of pepper and spice. Head is frothy, slightly off-white, with fair lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is sparkling clear light orange/brown. Flavor starts light to moderately acidic and finishes moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily and has a lively carbonation. It finishes lightly astringent and dry. Not a bad beer, just not a good IPA. Brooklyn could’ve done better with this one.

Sharp and flowery. It’s a well-made IPA but nothing special. About what you would expect for a reputable microbrew IPA.

Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle. Nose is full of earthy English hops. Flavor is relatively balanced between malt and a dry finishing hop flavor and bitterness. Overall, a vastly underrated beer from Garrett Oliver.

12oz Bottle. $1.95 Julio’s Liquors. Good pale ale though nothing spectacular. Better choices available.

Bottle at Winking Lizard. Pours a clear copper with a big white head. Grapefruity hop aroma with some malt. Crisp citrus hop flavor with a nice malt balance. Used to be one of my absolute favorite IPAs. I have found some better ones over the last two years, but this one is still solid overall.
