Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

it seems to me that drinkers of american IPAs who have any class will be quickly turned on by brews of this style. this proves that IPAs can be heavily hopped yet be balanced and interesting rather then an overwhelming blast of hops. i love hops more then many and as much as most but drinking a beer like this truly celebrates hops whereas others would say the same of their quadruple IPA @ 18%. like most things, americans have taken a good thing and slaughtered it, while our friends overseas have much more of a sense of moderation and of being able to appreciate things for what they are. clearly garrett oliver is part of that group, though certainly this he is not from abroad. this beer is what i thought it would be, thuoght it was certainly not dissappointing in that respect.

12oz bottle (variety pack) from Bayville Package Store, Fenwick Island, DE...pours amber in color, small white head...floral aroma, hops, citrus...nice hoppy flavor, some bitterness, orange zest...unusually oily (velvety?) mouthfeel, as if from the zest...quite good!

Bottle purchased at Sam’s Wine and Spirits, in Chicago. Pours a clear, weak iced tea with a small off-white head that diminishes to a thin cap. The nose is of toasty, lightly biscuity malt backed by fruity, floral and herbal hop notes. Medium-bodied and slick with significant soft carbonation and a bitter hop squeeze at the back of your tongue. The flavor drops off quite a bit from the aroma: herbal, floral hop notes combine into a significant bitter front backed by pale malt. The combination of hops don’t really work for me, and I’m almost made to think of green olive juice in the slightly lingering and bitter finish. This is a solidly constructed brew. I just don’t care much for the flavor profile.

Pale gold with white top. Fruit and hop aroma with a nice malt in there as well...Not too hoppy . Nice brew, nice chew...I would drink it again.

Amber/copper color with off white head. Nice pine and citrus hoppy aroma. Surprised by the flavor, not too hoppy and some nice spices. The bitterness that is initially present is quickly balanced out by the sweet flavor of caramel malts. Not your typical hop heavy IPA, but a nice beer none the less.

Pours a reddish-orange with a thin, creamy, white head. Spicy, citrus aroma. Flavor is very english: the hops are spicy and flavorful, the malt is sweet, caramel. Even though it is a bit toned-down compared to most IPAs, it is very flavorful and a pleasure to drink.

Bottle shared with afire-my pleasure. Orange-red pour, some subdued citrus -pine sent with hop notes. A sweet grainy feel with a hops mix. Good flavor for a style that is not my favorite and the aroma didn’t turn me off, actually rather subtle and refreshing.
