Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

Pours a clear orangey color, weak initial head for the style, as was the lacing. The aroma was oranges, pine, other citrus. The flavor was oranges, grapefruits, pine, lemons, finishing with a touch of bitterness, not all that harsh for an IPA though. The malty stickiness was there under all this, doesn’t really add much more than more oranges, but it was there. Mouthfeel was moderate for the style, carbonation not overly done (might have been able to use a tad more).

Pours a VERY light amber color. Large white head with large bubbles. No lacing at all. Earthy almost dirty aroma. Taste is somewhat sour, hop bitterness and nothing. Very watery. This beer is not worth the price of admition! $12 a six pack is out of line. I would buy Red Hook or Sam Adam’s Pale Ales any day before this. While they aren’t good neither is this and they cost half as much.

(Bottle BB 07/2007) Aromatic hoppy, citrus fruity and malty aroma. Bronze colour, very slightly hazy and small, more or less fully diminishing head with a hint of lacing. Citrus fruity, grassy, malty and moderately bitter flavour. Dry, softly carbonated and medium-bodied palate. Well balanced, crispy beer! 24/02/07

Pours a amber colour with a small head. Nice bitter finish with citrus notes. Despite its lower raing , I enjoye this better than the Dog Fish 60 min.

12 oz bottle. Light amber color. Fruity marmelade aroma with pepper, citrus, pineapple and orange. Flavor of exotic fruits with enough malt backbone. Some sharpness in the palate.

Pours a lean transparent copper without any texture. The head is thin and offwhite. The aroma has an initially sweet bubblegum aroma and little else. Very subdued hop aroma. This follows through into the flavor. There is some of a hop bite, a slight sweetness, but lacks the hop of most IPA’s. The palate and finish were both average.

355ml bottle - pours deep golden/orange with a very small white head. Aroma is in the floral "west coast" character, but with a strong malt background. Almost smells like a sort of subdued American barley wine. Flavour is like a flip of the aroma - some citrusy hops off the top followed by a sweet English malt middle which then gives way to a medium bitter hoppy finish. Nice stuff, and much more English in overall character than your typical American IPA. Well made, nicely balanced ale.

12 oz bottle - pours clear deep gold, with a small white head. Aroma mainly of west-coast hops at first, but have a few more sniffs around and you’ll get quite a bit of malt backbone in there too. Flavour is very nice, if somewhat simple (not in any way a bad thing). Starts off with very citrusy/almost blood orange tasting hops, then transitions into a medium bitterness and finishes smooth and malty. Three easy steps. Bit of alcohol in there too, but not gross. I found this one to be maltier than most IPAs I’ve tried. Nice. Note - the bottle I drank had a best before date of Mar. 07, which is now, so it may have mellowed since fresh bottling. Whatever, it’s very good.
