Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

I was hopping fro better aroma. It leaves a bitter grassy after taste not bad for the style. Nice look and palete. Sure i was expecting more but its a decent IPA anyway

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; clear light copper pour with a thin tan head, aroma has sweet malts and toffee, taste has sweet toffee malts, some pine and citrus, chewy sweetness, quite hard work to drink, off eye and ball come to mind, wasn’t expecting much and it delivered on all fronts.

Garrett Oliver is one to eschew the use of hops merely to appease the hophead crowd. For him, hops need to serve a stylistic purpose. Even with an IPA, they can’t be tossed in with abandon just for the hell of it. That can take some getting used to for a hop-crazed masochist, i.e., me. Still, getting to try several of these courtesy of our generous hosts in New York gave me the chance to appreciate this English-style IPA. It’s balanced but still noticeably hoppy. Grassy, herbaceous hops redolent of black tea. Beers like this are becoming less common here in the states, but they still have their place.

Can from Tesco. Lovely looking brew, clean gold with a long lasting white head, good mousse. Big hoppy nose, nicely balanced palate, well hopped with soft malty notes, could be a bit fuller in body. Good beer.
