Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

(Bottled) Hazy amber color with a small head and some lace. Flowery, lemony-grassy aroma with pine-resiny hops and sweetish toffee maltiness. Actually the flavor is not very sharply hoppy until the dry, very bitter finish. What bothers me a bit, though, is the straightforward feel. The flavor doesn’t develop much from start to finish. Lemony and grassy with decent, but somehow hidden, grainy maltiness. Medium-bodied, dry and bitter palate with well-balanced carbonation. I’ve raised the score bit by bit, yet still this doesn’t fight with the best IPAs out there. Needs more complexity. (Bottled, 04/2006, was 7-3-7-3-13=3.3) Hazy amber color with a small head. Very aromatic, american-hoppy aroma. Aromatic-hoppy toffee flavor with some burned sugar. Still pretty dry mouthfeel with smooth carbonation. Hoppy but quite harsh and straightforward IPA. (Bottled@HBF 2005, was 7-3-6-3-13=3.2) Deep golden color with a smallish head. Fruity and flowery aroma with a hint of alcohol. Aromatic-hoppy, woody flavor with - again - alcohol. Slicky, slightly alcoholic, wineous palate with low carbonation. A blend of IPA and barley wine. Brooklyn brews seem to have trouble hiding the ABV - in my mouth, at least.

At the Brickskeller, Wash DC, 9/2/05: Very bright yellow with a copper tint. Vaguely developing head. Copper-metallic hoppiness here. Finishes with a perfumey flourish.

12oz bottle Citrus, pine, peach honey and elderflower aroma - maybe a bit overly perfumed. Orange amber, low head, champagne bubbles. Burned note on the tip of the tongue comes before a neutral soapy light spot, woody notes, which in turn is followed by a quite flowery perfumed exit. Body feels lightish and mouthfeel is a tad fizzy. Sweet peachy aftertaste.

Poured an orangeish amber color with a small bubbly head. Citrusy, hop aroma. Bitter, bittersweet hoppy taste (Sticky sweet). No lacing. Slight alcohol taste as the beer warmed.

Deep copper color with a slight head. Pretty good for an english IPA. Modestly hopped with english hops giving a floral and herbal aroma and flavor with hints some earthiness. Some malt backbone as well. Overall this was a slight bit bland and the body was lacking. Had a wierd mineral flavor in the end.
