Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

Pours dark golden color with small head. Herbal sweet hop aroma. Upfront, almost floral sweetness and has a slight earl grey tea character. Long dry finish.

Brooklyn is impressing me more and more as a solid hitter. Vanilla, citrus and cascades hoppy. Pretty well balanced and not overdone. Light clear orange with white head. A little tart on the sides perhaps. Minor appearance dings for the ghastly colors.

PIss-orange with little head and little lacing. Aroma was of marinara sauce (??!). Nice full palate but flavor was very lacking. Bitterness was lingering and unpleasant, and I feel the flavor was forced to try and cover it. Rather dissappointing after the other Brooklyns were so tasty.

Re-Rate 12/08/02: Been 831 days since my last review of this beer, Wonder if it will be “Better or Worse”?

The beer pours a crystalline golden amber color; the head is modest, bright white in color and it degrades quite quickly leaving fine sheets of lace to insulate the glass. Sweet hop floral tones dominate the nose that is also citrus crisp, lightly sweet, and a very pleasing to the old schnozzle. The front is lightly sweet, the top skinny, the finish is sparsely carbonated, the hops quite pleasing in their bitter spicy bite. Not quite as “hoppy” as a California IPA, a bit more hop laden than the English IPA’s, personally I like it, but then I like all the Brooklyn Beers I’ve tasted. Darn you lucky Brooklyners, its probably just pouring out of taps all over town. <P>Is it “Better or Worse”, I vote “Better”, as I now understand more about the style and how it or I should perceive it.

Bottle from Utobeer. Amber coloured with a short-lived, off-white head. Aroma of caramel, with some citrus and floral hops. Flavour had lots of sweet malt, a touch of grapefruit and then a decent bitter finish. Enjoyable.

Sampled from bottle at Danish Beer Festival 2004 (#32).
Yellow coloured with a fine head. Nice and fresh aroma with lots of hops and some fruit and flower tones. Flavor is dry and bitter hoppy. A really nice and tasty IPA!

Appearance: Pours a clear, carbonated copper body with a fizzy off-white head. Smell: Aroma of fresh biscuits with a touch of caramel and hints of flowers. Taste: Dry, flakey biscuit maltiness with only a thin dose of sweetness. There’s a moderate citric bitterness that slowly builds along with distinct mint-like flavor. Finishes bitter and lingering. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Moderate carbonation. Drinkability: A decent, fairly easy-going IPA.

Bottle shared with Jerc. Orange, hardly any head. Some stale malt and hops in ok aroma. Medium tingly mouthfeel. More hops in taste than in aroma. Very orange citrus and tea-like. Pretty drinkable but ultimately ordinary.
