Commercial Description:
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

12oz bottle from thecarster1 poured into a pint glass. Pours almost completely clear amber with a small but creamy beige head that leaves good lacing. The aroma is pretty underwhelming for an IPA with some sweet citrus hops trying to come through but it’s mostly just some caramel malts and a slightly soapy hop aroma that I’m getting. The taste is marginally better with the hops making a more aggressive attempt to make their presence felt - lemon grass and oranges. The sweet malts are prominent in the middle before a bitterness hits in the finish - some hops but also a little metallic character. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation with a strong bitterness in the finish. The aroma needs a bit more hops and the finish is a little too metallic for my liking. It’s a decent and fairly well-balanced IPA that’s not memorable but still drinkable.

Bottle: pours golden/amber/ruby. Has a floral hops aroma with some light apple. Initially tastes bitter, but quickly turns more sweet than I was expecting showing the light malts. Finishes dry with nice bitterness.

Pours nice and orange. No head at all. Hits you with that hoppyness...but drinks surpisingly thinner than you would think. Makes it very easy to down quickly, which I did. Finishes quick...which means I need to get back to the glass. Thanks to Sancho for this one!

Bottle, best by Nov 2009. Poured a copper orange with an off-white head. Perfume aromas with citrus rind and malt backing. The flavor had caramel, pine, and grapefruit. Medium body and medium bitterness throughout.

Floral hops dominate the aroma though there are hints of citrus. Flavor also leans toward floral though there are hints of sweet citrus, especially orange. A malt backbone is evident. Medium body. Timid carbonation that works just fine. Slight bitter aftertaste.

Bottle. Small white, head, copper colored. Very hoppy aroma, grapefruit. Flavor is hoppy as hell, and has a grassy, citrus, pine aftertaste. Dry finish. Fairly good, even if typical of American style.

Bottle. Pours nice and golden with a small, off-white head. Aroma is a nice dry hops-one but with an occasional slight whiff of that cheesy smell that comes when the hops have been lying around too long. Not too disturbing, though. Flavour is sweetish with dry hops, but could do with more in my opinion, although the bitterness increases as it warms. Alcohol. Apple notes in the finish, which I kinda like. Quite nice, really.
