first impression: Thick head calms down quickly to a thin foamy cover. The color is rich and varied and has subtle golden variations within a deep red hue. The hops are very present, and the carbonation is very active. Lace hangs nicely to the glass. The color is very nice. Aroma is mindful of a clean, wet brick walk. Lingering attention is in the upper back roof of the mouth.
Aroma/Olfactory:
Malt is creamy, flexible, and exquisite. Just a hint of nuttiness.
Hops are grassy, citrusy, and very nice.
Yeast/Bacteria is of a brick or basement aroma, but not bad at all. Reminds one of autumn.
Raisins, soy and smoke, with impressions of a field after the rain.
Visuals/Appearance:
Color one of the most beautiful beers I know of despite a rather lame head.
Liquid is quite clear, and actively carbonated
Head is minimal but lace hangs if thinly for the duration, just slightly off white. The head is a downer, but minimal points off.
Taste/Flavor:
Lightly sweet, and ends with a rich, thorough bite.
Slightly sour by design, and bitter is its most welcome aspect.
Palate/Tactile:
Body/Mouthfeel is full and luxurious - like a real hot chocolate in texture, but not in flavor at all.
Texture is creamy with a finishing bite.
Carbonation is lively and plays off the color nicely.
Finish is thankfully long and bitter.
Overall, a very nice exemplar of an IPA - slightly sour, very bitter, biting, beautiful. Stands up to spicy foods, delicious on its own. Easily available, affordable and one of my favorite beers to enjoy.
travita (808), Lewisville, Texas, USA Dec 3, 2008 Copper colored with a nice clear look with a nice beige colored head. Smell is definelty pine, hops, very piney, malts, and caramel. Taste is malts, hops, caramel, and pine. austone (580), Turku; Pori, Finland Dec 1, 2008 Clear amber, small pale head. Nose is grapefruity hops and toffee malts, quite straightforward. Flavor is caramel malts with flowery hops, lots of grapefruit bitterness in the finish. Slight metallic tinge. Medium bodied, strongly carbonated mouthfeel. This one felt great a few years back, now it’s just alright. Misses that last punch aromawise. kcmo19 (71), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA Nov 30, 2008 Updated: Dec 1, 2008A very solid beer. Nice floral hop aroma, as well as a balanced taste of bitter floral hops and citrus. esjaygee (918), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Nov 29, 2008 Hazy amber with a thin white head that’s gone daddy gone. Aroma is heavily floral with some light malt and caramel to balance it out. Taste is heavy floral too, somewhat vegetal with a sweet balanced finish. Decent but not great. daknole (1131), Plantation, Florida, USA Nov 27, 2008 Tasting at Brewtopia. This is another pretty good beer from the Brooklyn Brewery. Copper colored pour with a small head. Hops hit the nose(citrus). Some malt is detectable, but the hops are winning the battle. Flavor is quite hoppy as well. I found it to be a very nice beer.
