Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, originally a summer seasonal, has been getting raves since becoming a year round offering in 1996. Garrett Oliver, a student of English brewing and beer history, uses English malts and hops to brew his EIPA in the classic, heavily-hopped style of the 19th century beers created for British soldiers serving in India.

Pours a very clean copper color with a modest white filmy head that has a good amount of staying power. Aroma has a very earthy hops punch with a light lemon citrus at the finish and some mild roasted malt presence at the tail end. Flavor has an early toasted malt presence which is quickly overtaken by a smooth earthy hops presence with notes of lemon and a noble hops bite at the finish. Body is modest with lots of fine carbonation and slight dryness imparted from the hop/toasted malt combination. Overall an enjoyable brew with a pretty pronounce, unique flavor. Nice to have one of these to mix up the typical American hopped pale ales out there on the market.

300 ml on tap in a random bar outside Rome. Dark golden yellow, pretty hazy, with a big, fluffy and persistent white head. Wonderful aroma, so fresh, clean and inviting. Definitely citrusy hop forward, resinous pine needles, some bubblegum as well. Proper herbal and grassy bitterness upfront, but then it’s slightly more sweet (esp. honey), sirupy and astringent than I’m used to. Moderately dry and slightly papery aftertaste. Average carbonation, medium body, creamy texture. The taste is not on pare with the excellent nose, but it’s still a lovely beer overall.

Bottle 35.5cl. Appearance:Amber body with a 1 finger frothy beige head, leaving some nice lacing. Aroma; Toprical hops, pine and butterscotch Taste: Tropical hops, resin and butterscotch flowing into star fruit with anice bittnerness and a little bit of orange zest bitterness Aftertaste is star fruit. creamy mouthfeel, but a thin body ( although not watery), average carbonation. A nice little IPA espeically for summer, seeing it’s refreshingness.

Bottle 35.5cl. Deep amber color, one finger frothy beige head, recedes slowly to a thin layer, light lacing; strong fruity nose, lime/lemon, citrus grass, apricot, pine, caramel, floral notes; medium bittersweet taste, citrus, star fruit, orange zest; medium to full body, creamy mouthfeel, average carbonation; smooth medium bitter finish, long lasting. Nice friendly IPA.

0.33l bottle poured in a chalice. A: Nice clear orange color with a one finger beige and foamy head which fastly dissipates leaving some lacings S: The smell of fresh and floral hops simply jumps into your nose. Delicious! Sweet malts are felt in the end T: Hops and sweet malts. Citrus. Very bitter end. Quite refreshing M: Light body. Medium carbonation. Dry and bitter end D: Good. Delicious hop bitterness. Quite refreshing beer. Delicious IPA, one of my favorites. Good quality beer. Brooklyn’s trademark. [ BA Review @ 4/30/2010 ]

Discrete, yet character-ful aroma of citrus and pastries. The taste is IPA-esque, with associations to brussel sprouts, ruccola and mountain plateaus. The aftertaste is hoppy as expected. Pretty decent IPA.

Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this brew, although perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised as I know Brooklyn always makes a quality product. Starts with a great fresh and flavorful aroma, bready caramel, floral hops, classic English IPA. Appearance is exceptionally pale and clear, fine but uninteresting. Taste is very intriguing, loved the smooth full palate that gives a full-bodied texture yet finishes dry. Caramel malt and nut/earth English hops in the flavor. Some fruity and yeasty complexities in the hoppiness too. Simply an excellent beer, stood it's ground paired with some flavorful Sicilian pizza too. Recommended.
