COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
January 2008 release of the Brooklyn Brewmaster Reserve series. Brooklyn Extra Brune is a Belgian-style dark abbey ale, brewed in the style developed by Belgium’s Trappist monasteries. Its rich, plumy, raisiny flavors are derived not only from Belgian yeasts, but also from imported Belgian dark “candi” sugar syrup. This syrup is ultra-caramelized, lending both flavor and color to this copper-brown beer. The yeast gives the beer a fruity/spicy complexity, which starts slightly sweet on the palate, but dries into the finish. This is a perfect beer for winter foods – game meats, lamb, stews, and rich cheeses. Malts: European Pilsner malt, Belgian “Special B”. Additional sugars: Belgian Dark Candi Hops: German Perle OG: 19.2° Plato ABV: 8.5%

Excellent Brune! Flavors were very spicy and fruity and enveloped the palate with cinammon, cloves, and caramel. Definitely worth trying.

Growler from Beerbill, thanks! Clear caramel/amber color with no head. Fruity aroma mixed with banana, yeast, and sweet grains. The taste was the same with nice belgian candi sugar flavors and good medium dry finish. When I first tried this I thought it was too dry and just ok. I just had some pepperoni pizza and now this beer really has a nice flavor!!

On tap at Tyler’s, Durham. Handsome dark brown pour into a tulip glass. Moderate head, minimal carbo, but a lively and effervescent body. The flavor is nice and complex, with dark fruits (plum and fig), sweet caramel, and a trace of bitter molasses. Medium palate and a long finish. One of Brooklyn’s better Belgian-style specialties.

Draft at Oldsmar Tap House. Cherry/mahogany body with a lasting off white head. About 2 fingers thick. Nice lacing. Tart cherries, yeast, Belgian funkiness, sweet dark fruits on the nose. Flavor profile similar, with the tartness from the cherry playing off of the overall sweetness very well. Candied sugars and sweet dark fruits (plums, dates, apricots) come into play on the back end. A residual sweetness wells in the back of the throat with each sip and continues to build, but never becomes annoying or overpowering. Medium bodied, slightly sticky and full mouthfeel. Low-medium astringency. Finish is lengthy, tart cherries, sweet fruits, yeast, a bit of funkiness and then sugary sweetness carries on. Great beer.

2/20/2008: Brooklyn Extra Brune pours a clear copper color with a moderate level of carbonation and a dense, lasting ivory head. The aroma include sweet cookie-like malt, some fruity (banana, cherry, dates) and spicy (pepper and clove) undertones, banana, and some caramel. The flavor is much like the aroma with additional dark fruit, Belgian candi, and peppery notes. It starts a bit sweet and gains some bitterness as the initial caramel and toasted bread maltiness passes. This beer has medium to medium-full body that is feels a bit thick and syrupy on the palate. The alcohol is pretty hidden in the aroma and flavor, but it definitely weights in after a couple glasses! Overall this is good beer that has a decent level of complexity and is easy to drink. ANother thumbs up to Brooklyn!

Growler fill from Party Town in Florence, Kentucky. Rating #23 for this beer...

On Tap at Oldsmar Tavern. Pours clear copper with lasting light tan head. Nose of fruity esters mostly coming from dates, cherries, raisins and prunes. I also get a din of caramel running in the background. The flavor is much like the aroma with neutral-ness to start. The flavor builds into distinct raisin, cherry, prune and date notes. There are also background notes of sweet malts and caramel floating around here and there. Flavors could be melded more.

Growler from Party Town. Poured clear dark rubt color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex caramel malt, tart fruit, banana and bubblegum aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium to heavy complex bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable beer.
