Commercial Description:
January 2008 release of the Brooklyn Brewmaster Reserve series. Brooklyn Extra Brune is a Belgian-style dark abbey ale, brewed in the style developed by Belgium’s Trappist monasteries. Its rich, plumy, raisiny flavors are derived not only from Belgian yeasts, but also from imported Belgian dark “candi” sugar syrup. This syrup is ultra-caramelized, lending both flavor and color to this copper-brown beer. The yeast gives the beer a fruity/spicy complexity, which starts slightly sweet on the palate, but dries into the finish. This is a perfect beer for winter foods – game meats, lamb, stews, and rich cheeses. Malts: European Pilsner malt, Belgian “Special B”. Additional sugars: Belgian Dark Candi Hops: German Perle OG: 19.2° Plato ABV: 8.5%

Draft. Pours a dark brown body with a tan head. Aroma is dark fruit, plum and some roasted malt, a good presence of belgian yeast and candi sugar. These traits last well into the finish, which dries and leaves behind a mild etoh warming.

Poured a lightly hazy brown amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, light banana, some clove, light fruit, and a bit of smoke. Taste was caramel, dark fruits, some spices, banana, and a dry, alcoholic finish.

Growler. Not much head. Flavor is mostly banana with the tenderness of the Belgian yeast. Pretty smooth with a nice alcohol bump. Lighty spicy.

On Tap at Oldsmar Tavern. Pours clear copper with lasting light tan head. Nose of fruity esters mostly coming from dates, cherries, raisins and prunes. I also get a din of caramel running in the background. The flavor is much like the aroma with neutral-ness to start. The flavor builds into distinct raisin, cherry, prune and date notes. There are also background notes of sweet malts and caramel floating around here and there. Flavors could be melded more.

Served from tap at the Brooklyn Beer Dinner at Capital Ale House - Downtown. Very clear ruby amber body with no head and nice lacing. Sweet candi sugar, caramel, molassas, and light floral hops and light rum soaked fruit aroma. Sweet caramel, molassas and rum soaked fruit flavor with hints of banana. Medium full body with low carbonation.
