COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Most beer was once smoky and we think smoke is still delicious. Brooklyn Fire & Ice is a robust porter that wraps beechwood smoke around a silky core of oatmeal and roasted malts. Wood is cut in the beechwood forests surrounding Bamberg, Germany, and our maltsters use it to dry their smoked malts, which form the basis of this beer. Together with a blend of roasted malts, it creates a beer that is gently smoky and beguilingly chocolaty, with notes of coffee and caramel.

Transfer from BA review on 2-13-14- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a nearly pitch black color with a one finger head composed of a thick brown foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a light level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell with a light level of caramel sweetness and some vanilla. Along with these aromas are a little bit of cocoa, some oatmeal and a light smoky smell that produces a very nice aroma overall. Taste – The taste begins with a moderately strong roasted malt flavor that is a little bit on the drier side with only a hint of caramel. An oatmeal flavor as well as a light coffee flavor are there as well with them gaining in intensity as the flavor advances to the middle where they then maintain their strength to the end of the taste. Along with these flavor transitions so too comes a moderate smoky and woody flavors. Some light chocolate, more caramel, and light vanilla flavor join the tongue more toward the end sweetening the taste ever so slightly. At the end, with the blend of chocolate, smoke, caramel, oat, and roast one is left with a still rather dry but rather easy drinking and quite balanced taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. While a slightly thicker and chewier body may have accentuated the oat and roasted flavors slightly better, the lower carbonation was on spot and made for a nice drinking porter. Overall – A light to moderately smoked porter that had nice flavors and a good drinking feel and taste. If you are looking for something super smoky then you won’t find it here, but you will find a nice drinking and balance porter.

Keg at the Bottle Shop, Bermondsey, 06/09/14. Pitch black with moderately appointed dirty tan spotting and edgework. Nose is rich malt, dark fruits, brown bread, spice, subtle rauschings, ashtray tones. Taste comprises dark toffee, dark malt, biscuit notes, oatmeal vibes, light chocolate, less smoke than the nose. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok smoked offering.

Serving: Draft at Fire Works Leesburg Dark brown pour with a slight, light tan head. Odd nose that’s a bit smokey and a bit medicinal. Slight dark chocolate notes get overtaken by charcoal, smoke, and a very odd, peaty/medicinal note. Based on the description, I’m guessing this wasn’t the intent. Possibly infected?

8oz pour at Galaxy Hut pours a murky, deep brosn with some spitty, cream colored head. Nose has some cold smoke, cracker, wet bread crust, bits of vanilla, a little stale cola, some kielbasa. Flavor is sweet and smokey, malt, a little tree bark, bread crust, caramel, some lurking coffee, meaty, roast mushroom, a splash of BBQ sauce. Sweet, smokey, sticky finish.

Keg at the mad hatter brew tap. Pours dark brown, near black, no head. Aromas of smoke and liquorice. Taste is more of the same. Sweet finish. Not bad.

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and snifter served, displaying an opaque, black/brown color, with a fluffy layer of brownish tan head foam, and wavy lacing on the glass. The nose was nicely roasted, creamy, and woody, followed by a pleasant, mellow scent of grilled sausage/campfire smoke. The taste was somewhat similar notes, with the roastiness more defined with some coffee & light molasses, but seemed to wash out and became less robust in texture & body. Thus, light to medium bodied, moderate bitterness, moderate malt, with a seltzery quality to the carbonation, that seemed to reveal a hint of saltiness for the finish. Okay, but disappointed, considering the impressive start.
