Most beer was once smoky and we think smoke is still delicious. Brooklyn Fire & Ice is a robust porter that wraps beechwood smoke around a silky core of oatmeal and roasted malts. Wood is cut in the beechwood forests surrounding Bamberg, Germany, and our maltsters use it to dry their smoked malts, which form the basis of this beer. Together with a blend of roasted malts, it creates a beer that is gently smoky and beguilingly chocolaty, with notes of coffee and caramel.

On tap at Hough’s in Greenfield. Nice smoky and malty aromas. Pour was a deep dark brown with a thin tan film for a head. Taste was nice. Coffee and dark roasted malt with a distinct smoky backbone. Notes of caramel and toffee were hidden deep in the swallow. Nice carbonation.

On tap at The Hop Yard, Raleigh. Dark brown, nearly black, pour with a short khaki head. Chocolate and smoke aromas. Taste offers coffee, chocolate, peat, and smoke. Not as subtle as the aroma would lead you to believe. Nicely done.

Smoke mostly in the aroma. Goes great with hopcat Crack fries... Not much smoke in the taste, maybe a little on the first couple sips but you get used to it and it fades fast. Overall a great beer. I wish it was smokier.

Nice smoked porter, especially because it wasn?t overdone. Licorice, beef jerky, smoke, vanilla, bitter chocolate, and roasted malts round out the aroma/flavor profile.

Draft at Mad Mex Willow Grove. Hazy brown/black pour with tan head. Roasty choc malt, hops, cacao, oats in the nose, tastes like a complex milk stout with rauchy and hoppy notes. Solid.

Draft sample at Eight Ball. Pours brown in color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor had smoked malts, slightly meaty, ash, caramel, some coffee and chocolate, thinner and not as interesting as another smoked beer I had at the same time.

On tap, poured into a snifter. Robust aromas of vanilla bean, smoked pork, grain and chocolate bars come through. The aroma starts to lean more towards chocolate-covered raisin as it warms up. It pours a dark, oily brown color with a light tan, dense, soft head. A thick, fuzzy ring is retained with a thick film surface. The lace is runny and leaves a mostly clean glass. The taste is a medium high sweet and medium bitter. It’s a viscous and sticky beer with a medium body and soft, flat-ish head. Flavors of smoked meats, coffee, chocolate, vanilla bean, and maybe even a touch of anise seed make for an intriguing blend in the mouth. It finishes with dark fruits and smoke. A wood note comes through in the finish later as the glass warms up. The smokiness has an astringent quality in the aftertaste as it lingers with some roasted grains, chocolate, and dark bread notes.

Transfer from BA review on 2-13-14- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a nearly pitch black color with a one finger head composed of a thick brown foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a light level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell with a light level of caramel sweetness and some vanilla. Along with these aromas are a little bit of cocoa, some oatmeal and a light smoky smell that produces a very nice aroma overall. Taste – The taste begins with a moderately strong roasted malt flavor that is a little bit on the drier side with only a hint of caramel. An oatmeal flavor as well as a light coffee flavor are there as well with them gaining in intensity as the flavor advances to the middle where they then maintain their strength to the end of the taste. Along with these flavor transitions so too comes a moderate smoky and woody flavors. Some light chocolate, more caramel, and light vanilla flavor join the tongue more toward the end sweetening the taste ever so slightly. At the end, with the blend of chocolate, smoke, caramel, oat, and roast one is left with a still rather dry but rather easy drinking and quite balanced taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. While a slightly thicker and chewier body may have accentuated the oat and roasted flavors slightly better, the lower carbonation was on spot and made for a nice drinking porter. Overall – A light to moderately smoked porter that had nice flavors and a good drinking feel and taste. If you are looking for something super smoky then you won’t find it here, but you will find a nice drinking and balance porter.

Keg at the Bottle Shop, Bermondsey, 06/09/14. Pitch black with moderately appointed dirty tan spotting and edgework. Nose is rich malt, dark fruits, brown bread, spice, subtle rauschings, ashtray tones. Taste comprises dark toffee, dark malt, biscuit notes, oatmeal vibes, light chocolate, less smoke than the nose. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok smoked offering.
